Bailey03's WIP

Not sure how I missed this thread, but ran through it in detail last night.
I can honestly say it was a thoroughly enjoyable hour.

Excellent work throughout.

Thanks, Skel and cfwheeler. Welcome to the thread, by the way!

Demi, yeah, that reminded me to check out some of Kathryn's tutorials on horse painting. Maybe I'll start messing with the horse this weekend.

That's a big cape! The white looks awesome!

It looks just like the 5 crosses on the left shoulder with an all white cape is correct right? Maybe a damask style border? You have your work cut out for you sir :)

Or maybe something like this:

Ha, that might be a bit too complicated! Yeah, the crosses on the shoulder seem correct... but the cape on this figure isn't really ideal for that. The right shoulder is all bunched up and the left will have a shield over it. So I'll probably skip that and just go for a border. I started messing around with a border but wasn't happy with how it was looking. I decided to take a step back and not force it. In the meantime I opted to work on another figure to clear my head a bit. This one is a blast from the past. I posted my first WIP picture all the way back on page 1 of this thread, over a year and a half ago. Usually when I go that long without working on a figure it's doomed to the graveyard of never to be finished projects. Or, if I really like the sculpt I'll eventually strip it and start over. But I'm still pretty pleased with how I painted the face. I did a few tweaks to the highlights and some of the blends. And then tossed it on the body.

He's got quite the outfit, lots of stuff strapped on him. I'm not entirely clear where I'm going with it in terms of colors, so I've focused on the armor. Dark/light, warm/cool... I'm hoping as I fill in more of the armor panels I'll start to get some ideas for the rest.

That is one iconic head. I have to say the hole miniature sure works well. It really reminds me of the later Conan books where he is a little older, maybe a little more cautious. The expression and the miss matched baggy armor are great. I do not envy you the task of sorting out all the different layers of his gear though.

Thanks, Persifal.

Milosh, yeah, I regretted not finishing this guy so I was happy to bring him out of retirement for another try.

Demi, I was thinking the same thing. I've been looking around online at some of the images from the conan comics for inspiration on the clothing. Unfortunately conan is not known for wearing much in the way of clothes so it's been of limited help.

Trystan, thanks!

Try to search Age of Conan armors. A lot of very interesting armors are there. I hope it helps even if they are from the game.

Thanks, Persifal, good idea.

Zab, yeah, I'm going to do some parts as leather. He's also wearing some furs. I hadn't thought about lacquered wood, that's an interesting idea. I just want to avoid having everything be brown.

Wolf fur is often grey toning to brown down the spine, plus think of big cats like ocelot and lynx which are more Ochre browns.
But this is fantasy who says it has to be a recognised animal?

It's been a busy weekend but I had some time to work on Sumothay. I started out with more of a green theme but wasn't happy with it. So I repainted those parts and ended up with what you see here. Sort of has a barbarian king vibe now. What do you think of where I'm going with him?

I also took some time this weekend to experiment with the airbrush. No figures yet, I started with a coloring book to work on my aiming and control. Not too bad... though I imagine when I move onto something 3-D it will be a lot tougher.

Liking the muted reds...and using a coloring book is a great idea, i am going to do that to understand my airbrush better.

Yeah, that was a tip I got from misterjustin. I thought it was a really smart idea, plus a friend had given me some coloring books as a joke so might as well put them to good use!

And now he's got hands! And swords too. All that's left to add are the cape and banners, but I want to finish painting the outfit details first. The swords were a bit tricky and I'm still working on them. For whatever reason I find the white metals far more difficult than the yellow metals. The blends seem a lot more finicky. They'll look fine then I'll tilt it to change the light and the transitions will be obvious. I'd like to get more light-dark variation especially on the right sword but I think I'll need to switch over to some glazes and inks to get there.
