Well, I can't add anything new. It's looking very promising skel. I just love that you stick to your true metallics instead of nmm. Nmm looks too cartoony imo, and your minis all have this dark atmosphere about them, so adding spongebob on their socks would sorta ruin it.

Great work.

You know.... I hate to say it, but the majority of his space marine is technically done in NMM. The purple armor issupposed to be metal. And he didn't use metallics on them, but instead relied upon normal acrylics. Only the gold is done in TMM.

thanks friends, glad you like! :good:

ive started to build a base but its probably not going to be anything serious. lets see if i can put a piece of a banner on there. not sure.

Wow! Amazing as alwais. Really a nice paintwork. I'm particularly amazed by the shoulderpad and tabard texture. How do you do that? Is it complicated to achieve? I would love to try it :curl-lip:

complicated, hmm... guess that depends who you're asking. on the shoulderpad i begun painting a pattern using diluted black ink with a little white, ink are great as its highly pigmented so you can dilute it a lot and even get solid lines, extending the drying time a litte. then i glaze highlight and shadows, putting the pattern beneath some layers which take care of the most gloss from the ink. then some carefully places some more highlights and fill in some lines to make the patterna appear a little bit "3D". easy? well. it take some time anyway! :)

well in my world they are using plastic armor like the stormtroopers in star wars ;) seriously i cant think of a single space marine miniature painted all in metal colors, but if this is true i have to tryout sometime! :)

Wow that space marine is awesome! Such rich colors and perfect balance between dark and light areas. Love the textures on the tabard and the shoulder pad. Keep up the awesomeness and get ready for questions regarding painting and stuff in the future! :D

mind if I ask what brand of ink you used on the purples? I got some Windsor and newton inks but they react terribly to being varnished or glazes being applied over them. I have a feeling im using non waterproof inks or something.

She's back! Don't worry, I won't bug ya long. lol! I've been doing good over here, Skell, thank you! I just haven't had time to paint at all. I'm really trying to figure out was to work into the schedule again (after I replace all of my dried out paints.)

And I just love the purple, the blends are eye-catching. Great job!

yeah i normally do. main reason is that when the time comes to paint the base, you just want it done so you can proceed to next mini, ending up rushing it. for me its always better to have a ready built base to begin with.

This I had to jump in on. I used to fight and fight with bases - absolutely hated them! And they were aweful. So I'd come over to this thread and just marvel at not only Skellie's painting but his bases. We chatted a bit and he told me these same words and gave me more great advice on top. So, I decided to give a go - completely turned things around and now I really enjoy making bases. Thanks for that one m'dear! I really appreciate the advice.

And before I go - Hi Swanp - I hope you don't mind me butting in, but I used to use W&N Drawing Inks all the time. I loved them for specific jobs - but yes, they will run and bleed and run and bleed all over the place. I got to where I could do some varnishes and washes after applying but only with certain colors (IIRC the blue was the worst than all of them combined - but the rest weren't easy either). I figured out if I applied them later in the process, when the mini was closer to finished, that it helped. I used to use a very, very light coat of Testors Dull Coat to seal them, but it was so light, I'd seal them three times. After that I could apply washes and varnishes to the inks without them running all over the place - but only if I didn't go overboard with them. Anyway, that's just what I encountered working with those inks directly so just thought I'd share.

Skellie, keep rocking it! And thanks again hun!

Cheers,
Kath

He's looking lovely. Your TMM is just amazing. A real shame you couldn't get the brass to work. That would have looked fantastic

hey Kath thanks for the kind words! hope you find some time to paint again soon! :)

swampthing; i only used W&N ink. i have no problem whatsoever with glazing on top of them but i recall ive heard it can be a problem with them if varnished. i never do varnish my miniatures so i can neither confirm or deny that.

darth, ty. i know... it kind of sucked.

I'm still amazed at how this guy ^^^ makes his gold from "Smoking" silver. That is just so cool to me.

Think I may invest in those little casting kits for bricks and what not. Forget the name but you know what I'm talking about. Will make certain types if bases that much easier.

Oh one more question for ya Skel. I've been wanting to practice freehand and make banner with Plasticard for forever. I picked up some thin sheets of it from Gale Force 9. One side is glossier than the other. Well, it just wouldn't take paint. Left horrible streaks and paint deposits where you lift up the brush. So I tried a number of things. I washed it , cleaning it with rubbing alcohol, scrubbed it with sandpaper, primed it. Still wouldn't work. M

So I ordered a different brand from PK Pro. Same results. Same basic type of glossiness on one side, not so glossy on the other. Not too big of a deal as I'm going to just use milliput instead, but have you ever heard if PC acting this way? Do you know a way to make it behave? A better brand? Ty...

Testors dull coat is the best matt varnish on the market by a country mile. If anything can do it then it's that. Another possible solution if that doesn't work is get some milliput mix it up then get a little bit of it and an old crappy brush and mush it up with water until it goes to the consistency of milk and then very thinly layer it on the plasticard. It will dry and then you should be good to go. If that doesn't work bin it. I personally don't use plasticard I use the very thick foil you get on things like expensive coffe tins or baby milk powder. Smooth it out with the back of a paint brush or chop stick cut it too shape and using the handle of the brush as a convenient former ripple it to the shape you want and then spray it black never had any problems with this material.

Good solid options there, thx Andy. Skell can tell you, I've been bugging him for some time about his banners and so he is the reason I just ordered some milliput. This will definitely work for what I need (practice freehand and make banners) but I ultimately wanted to do it on PC because you can bend it back and forth so well. It makes a damn good flowing banner. Anyway, I'll try some of the things you mentioned and see how it works. Another possibility that struck me yesterday was that I just need to keep applying layers. You know how those first 1-2 glaze layers can look crappy because the color just hasn't been built up yet? Well this could be what I am experiencing, and then some because the PC is flat and the paint has nowhere to pool to like it does on a mini. Just need to try some more layers, and also make sure the brush is really really unloaded.

guess there are lots of possibilities. i personally dont like plasticard as it look to "perfect", with milliput you can more easily do battle worn weathered banners, which i prefer. as for painting PC i never really had any problems, and i have GF9 too. not sure whats going on.

i think when smoothening banners or any freehand, the glazes are in regular a little bit thicker than usual, as you say it have nowhere to pool. but yeah, unload! ;)
