Are shields worthwhile? I\'m painting up an army I\'d someday like to play and considering the WYSIWYG, should I put shields on my spearmen and/or archers?

Okay, so I should have stuck to what I knew would work. However, testing stuff out, I sprayed my mini with Testor\'s Gloss Coat. Now how do I make parts of the mini unglossy? Usually I just brush paint the flat parts matt varnish and the shiny parts gloss varnish, but I thought I\'d try out...
