Damn GW spray has just F$%ked up another model..that\'s 4 models with 3 different cans in 4 weeks...starts off fine then blam fuzzy Duck.....
was wondering if you guys can recommend any good Spray primers and if possible where to get them ..I usually work in black but am just about to start experimenting with white but pen to any suggestions.........
p.s Hey Up Mods.is there any possibility of having a thread section for product reviews or similar as searching for spray brings up a million threads that mention spray somewhere....just a thought.

A good few years back I found this was a problem too, but haven\'t had any issues with GW primer for an age. Is yours an old batch? I think on the whole GW primer is pretty good, but it\'s still overpriced and they do seem to hit a bad run every now and then.

I\'m imagining that you get through primering a fair few minis each week. Would you be able to use an airbrush and mix up your own primer colours? I don\'t exactly know in depth functionality of air brushes and the sort of pigments you\'d need to work with to get a good primer coat (is it different to standard paint?) It could be a good approach to the problem, but I\'m not sure!

I have to agree with Lono unfortunately. :p
Hehe. I never have probs with GW white and I use it 90% of the time.

Have you tried shaking the can?

Thats sarcasm.... carries over so well on the internet.

Nigel

I also brush prime, because sometimes spray primers seem to be to thick. Can\'t help you really. Sorry

not to be the dumb n00b here but i myself have used a osh brand (like home depot or any home repair shop) black primer for years (did model cars back in the day)i dont actually know who really makes the primer though.
they take a bit of shaking but all i have ever got as a problem is the primer shows up shiny once in a blue moon. probably due to the weather or lack of shakking.
good luck

The stuff I plan for competitions which needs to be supersmooth I use Vallejo Foundation white, a brush on primer.

But mix it 50/50 with distilled water and airbrush it on, as it\'s much faster than brush priming.

But for everything else, GW white spray. Only ever had a few problems with it.

I\'d strongly recommend not using Vallejo\'s spray on. Goes slightly grainy and ends up with a weird texture. Every time I used it I had a bad experience, but I keep crawling back to it in the hope it will get better....like the little bitch I am.

Granddad!
go to Halfords and get a can of Holts(or whatever it is they stock) or B&Q for plasticote, you should be able to get white, black or grey in either place
I\'ve been favouring the grey plasticote of late, seems a smoother finish, and, IMHO shows up any missed mold lines better

oh yeah, Wilkinsons might have something too

hmmmm I used to use the Halfords stuff years ago may give that a shot..
@lono your right I go through a fair few I think it\'s a recurring batch thing at the moment Store manager said they\'ve had a few returned....

@Nigel.......... I shake it like a mental case  thing is it\'s been coming out fine then suddenly rubbish..seems to know when it\'s something that\'s taken me a bit longer to do.

Not mine, but good work.

I\'ve found Tamaya the smoothest, but for general use, I use Krylon or Duplicolor.

You might try an automotive primer. My favorite spray primer is Duplicolor (an automotive primer), but it\'s only available in the states as far as I can tell.

Just stay away from the one that say that they fill in gaps and such.

I also recommend trying any new primer on a test mini or two before moving to something that you care about.

interesting ..the only worry I can see with that is the enamel base with acrylic over the top..Rather than display pieces they are gaming pieces so handled a lt and it could possibly chip??? no sure but definitely interesting..

I\'ve heard of Krylon Airhead may search that out at some point..going to a model show soon (Scale Model in Telford) so may find something there...

- Demonherald,

You may have a very good point as my works are for display. A lot has to do with the weight and shape of the piece and how often the piece will be handled.
But you may want to try it on your display pieces down the road.

Best,

PRIMER....

i too have had this occur with any and all spray primers i have tried...the only sure thing is brush on primer. Reaper makes an excellent white and black primer as does vallejo unfortunately GW did away with Smelly Primer which worked well......spray that i have been using lately is the Grey Tamiya Fine Surface Primer, has excellent propulsion from the can so coverage is excellent with little of the product used. other than that take the time to do a brush on primer...unless you are painting armies. If you want spray on use Krylon. It is WAY better than that over priced GW crap.

But I use Gesso paint on primer. Spray on is faster, but Gesso lets you get more control. And it is really cheap. I bought a jar two years ago and I am still using it. Just make sure you keep the jar sealed.

I think part of your problem might be technique rather than the spray. When applying primer, don\'t spray continuously, but in short bursts. Continue to shake in between those short bursts. Shake the can by rotating your arm rather than by doing it back and forth (so the head of the can rotates rather than goes up and down). I think it gets fuzzy because after spraying for a while it\'s no longer well mixed. Hope this helps.

I\'ve tried GW, Vallejo, bargin bucket sprays and auto sprays, to be honest, the best ones have been the auto sprays but I reckon if the conditions are wrong, it can happen to you with any brand, so yeah, brush ons, but they take too long when painting units.
I\'d like to give the Krylon a go, but I\'ve never seen it here in Spain.
At the moment I\'m using GW (which, touch wood, is going on just fine).
Unless you\'ve got a sealed atmosphere where you can control humidity and temp., I guess it\'s a lottery.:)

@hubbabubba I hear ya it\'s a lottery allright...GW has been fine for years just the odd bump here and there just a lately (the last year)it\'s been more and more an issue...
I\'ve considered brush on and will most likely go with it for display pieces but I average 12-15 pieces a week for commissions etc more when doing units so need a quicker alternative..

Halford automotive primer?

I\'d recommend it anyway regardless of volume - cheap as chips, tough as old boots, reliable as a er, reliable thingy.

Just be sure to shake properly and warm the can and you\'ll be golden.
