Stripping Resin

I just did a quick search and only found one topic regarding stripping resin figures. It referred to something called \"Painter\'s Pal.\" Never heard of it, but figured it\'s worth asking about other substances since it\'ll be the weekend before I get a chance to shop for anything new.

Has anyone tried stripping resin with acetone or the usual stripping agents? Anything to watch out for -- softening of the resin, hair catching on fire, explosions, hardening of the ocular jelly, that sort of crap?

I\'d try it on a small piece of resin as a test, but alas, I have no small pieces of resin that I can risk.

I\'ve had luck stripping acrylic paints with Pine-Sol. Haven\'t tried Simple Green yet, which is what I\'m mostly using to strip off my minis. I\'d imagine it works as well. Even in the best of times, paint doesn\'t seem to like to stay on resin too much, though I have heard of one type of primer that is supposed to be excellent.

As for things to watch out for...umm...I didn\'t notice any softening of the resin in Pine Sol, and other than a little light-headedness, I\'ve never run into anything. Certainly nothing explosive. :D

Anyway, I can vouch for Pine Sol being safe...it just takes some soaking.

acetone is a big no no! it will eat away the resin like it does to plastc. very evil. simple green might work. havent tried it yet tho...still kind of recovering from the acetone effect...

Oh, I should have mentioned that this is one of the old Armourcast Titans (an Eldar Phantom, to be exact) so I\'ll be needing quite a lot of the stripping agent. Pine-Sol sounds like a good candidate, due to coming in large floor-washing sizes.

Also, it was primed with... probably Krylon grey primer and painted with craft paints ten years ago -- I bought it new in 1995ish. I\'m hopeful that craft paint is easier to remove than other brands.

It\'s good to know that acetone is to be avoided. That\'s my usual choice for pewter figures, but I was scared to try it on the resin.

How long of a soak in Pine-Sol did you leave your resin model? And what\'s the minimum time before the paint starts peeling/bubbling? Since these titans are hard to come by (and/or expensive), I want to be extra careful. :)

Thanks for the tips thus far.

Hi Kep, try oven cleaner (EZ Off) works a treat and doesn\'t harm resin, although it will weaken some glue joints and putty to some extent so you might want to watch out for that.

The times I\'ve stripped off of resins, they didn\'t have that much paint on them, but usually a couple of hours to a day was enough that stuff was coming off nicely. The stuff I was taking off was Gunze acrylics and Duplicolor sandable primer, so it shouldn\'t have any problem going through the craft acrylics and Krylon. It\'s pretty easy to dunk back in if you can\'t get the stuff off, and had no noticeable effect on the resin. If you can wait long enough, I do have some sprue bits and things from resin kits, so I can do a test in Simple Green as well. I don\'t think either will really do any damage to the resin, especially if it\'s not a recast or anything. Some recasts have resin so weak, I could sneeze on them and break it. :p

I\'ll back up Einion and say I\'ve heard of people using oven cleaners as well, but I\'ve stayed away from the stuff. I have a respirator and gloves and stuff, so I might try it again, but the fumes always gave me headaches. :)

@ Shawn R.L. - I know I\'ve thrown things in Simple Green for over 24 hours (I forgot I was stripping some Mordheim stuff), and it didn\'t seem to attack the plastic. It did seem to loosen up the glue and putty though. My guess is it\'s fine, just don\'t leave it in there too long (or keep an eye on it) and don\'t take some really stiff brushes at it when you\'re trying to take some of the more stubborn paint off.

No prob. Keep in mind, that this is based on my experience from the plastic bases. They were fine and dandy. They fell off of the figures, but I think that was the glue and green stuff dying. ^_^

A Hobbytown USA store. I was thinking about it after I posted, and it was fall/winter of 1994. I had previously bought a Warhound and a Reaver from the same store, and since I had a good job at the time I splurged and bought the Phantom when it came out, too.

I also had two Tempests, but sold one recently on eBay (for a measly $36!! ARGH!!). Hm, come to think of it, I also have a Tyranid Malefactor, Exocrine, and Dactylis. Though I\'m not sure where the Dactylis is. Was sure I had a Haruspex, too, but no idea where it\'s gotten off to.

I kind of went crazy when I first saw the Mike Biasi stuff the first time. :D

Still want me to spot check primer and acrylic on resin in Simple Green?

...okay...that was one heck of a run on sentence.

Simple Green works fine on plastic and resin, but, to my dismay, I melted about 50 termagants when I used Pine-Sol. Fingers melted and round bases were putty..won\'t do that again. W&N brush cleaner melts plastic but works great on metal. Have to go to acetone for some unknown paint on a bunch of old minis I was given since paint is still evident after alcohol, Simple Green, and W&N Brush cleaner.

I\'m not in any rush to get the titan stripped -- the paintjob that I have in mind (inspired by one of the French GD entries) is going to take quite awhile and I\'ll need to clear off some other projects first. Thus any testing at all would be very helpful. :)

Looks like Anatora has already used Simple Green on resins, so it looks like we\'re good.

I\'m going to probably still run an experiment on my side. Weather permitting, I\'ll spray primer a bit of something today when I get off of work. I\'m going to also put some green stuff, Mr Surfacer, polyester putty, and Squadron putty on them for my own piece of mind (since I use the latter three a lot on my own resin models). I probably won\'t be able to slap some paint and try to soak it until the week of May 9th though, since I\'ll be leaving for vacation. w00t!

Is there any varnish on the figure?

There doesn\'t appear to be any varnish, but the paint doesn\'t scratch off easily so I\'m fairly confident there\'s at least a light matte coat (likely Krylon as that\'s what I used back then).

I\'ll have to remember to buy some Simple Green this weekend.

OK...I\'ll probably run an experiment of sorts for my own benefit when I get back from my vacation. I\'m behind on my weresharky, so I should probably finish that tonight...while I still can.

A really simple experiment...

I think it was Dragonsreach who discovered that Domestos works as a great stripper for plastics.

So blame him if it goes wrong:D

It is cheap and readily available however...so worth a try;)

Mate, its not Domestos, its Dettol!

Can\'t imagine the bleach would do that much good? The dettol works apparently cos it has the same pine oils in it as Pine Sol
