A Question

Hi all,

I've not been active in the forums for a long time but today I've been contemplating something and wondered what other members thoughts are.

So lately I've been trying to paint minis again, my eyesight is not what it used to be and therefore I am struggling to come up with anything that I am half way pleased with. I have tried magnifiers and I can't get on with them plus I also have some pretty strong prescription glasses which do help me but are not ideal. Please understand I am not complaining or looking for any kind of sympathy I'm just interested in what others think of my question. That question is

When do you think you will quit painting altogether and why,

From my perspective I've painted for many years now and I've had some success with minis in both competitions and on here with good scores, also I've been lucky enough to make several Cmon annuals so I am very easily disheartened when the minis I produce now don't make the same levels as I've managed before in quality. Don't get me wrong I do not consider myself an artist or a top grade painter but I can see how my minis are starting to slide in quality of the finished article.

I'm thinking of stopping altogether or maybe even going down an different route maybe scaling up towards 70mm and bigger but then the painting has to be smoother. Another avenue I've been thinking about is terrain like the range of buildings from Tabletop world for instance.

So I ask again when or what do you think would make you decide to give up on the minis.

suppose when interest fail but i doubt i ever quit totally, if i dont get some desease or something. ups and downs! ive had a couple of years traveling to competitions all across europe with maximum interest but now i feel its not all that important. i dont feel the need of painting everyday as i used to. i lost interest in updating my fb site, lost interest in uploading images to the gallery, lost interest in blogging. updating my thread on this site once a while but thats it. it feels awesome that i didnt ever consider making minipainting for money/a living!

I feel your pain.
My arms have gotten too short to focus on minis.
I go to stronger lenses so I can see up close, but end up with massive headaches.
I tried to get back into painting about a year ago. My skill set was so rusty as to leave me feeling like a newb again.

I still appreciate a well done mini, but know that I won't be doing another 8 in this lifetime.

I don't know if I will ever quit completely, unless something happens that means I can't hold a brush or something. I will have periods of inactivity and have always had those. But I always come back! Right now, I'm not very active, for instance, but I know I will paint again sooner or later.

For me, it's not so much about the results I achieve, but the act of painting. It gives me so much, just sitting down with paint and brushes and create something.

That being said, I don't know what will happen and how I will feel when and if my eyesight becomes a problem.

I wish you could still get something out of painting, despite your eyesight. I would try out larger scales. It will, however, put you out of your comfort zone for a bit, seeing as you have mainly painted 30 something mm minis and your methods seem quite adapted to that size. But, that could be an inspiring challenge, instead of being an obstacle.

I have too many to quit now!

Seriously though, I'd give the larger scale a try. No point stopping what you love when there are other ways to do it.

Thanks for the input guys, I still love to paint but don't like the obvious drop in quality I can see the minis ok from a distance with glasses on and can see the mistakes the problem comes when I put brush to mini as I lose sight of the brush tip against the surface of what I am painting, that said I like the look of the clip on lenses so might have to try that thanks DR.

I don't think I'll ever stop painting. They'll have to pry my favourite Raphael 8404 from my cold, dead hands.
