Ainu's Mini of the Week: Converted Vostroyan Radio Operator ~ GD UK Charity Squad By Penguin
This week my top mini is Penguin's Vostroyan Radio Operator that he painted up for the GD UK Charity Squad. My reasons for picking this are due completely to the fantastic paintjob, especially considering that it is Penguin's first attempt at NMM, and he's younger than me, aged thirteen.
The two things that jump out at me are the NMM rusted-steel armour and the face. The NMM has been executed so well that it appears to be spot-on and realistic, which is remarkable for a first attempt at this technique. The rust adds a whole new element to the miniature, and helps to create a gritty sort of realism.
Meanwhile, there is the face. Though the picture isn't too clear around the eyes, from earlier shots the eyes are more visible, and they are fantastic and very life-like. But the best part of the head is the face itself, with the use of reds and purples, as well as paints normally used for faces.
Another notable feature of the Vostroyan would be the radio box on the ground. The NMM is so well blended that it looks as if he has been painting without metallics for quite some time now.
The auspex, though not original, is very nicely done, though I wish that someone would try something different on the screen. Though this is my only query with the miniature been discussed.
Lastly, the backpack is so well done that I can't critisize it, though I can praise it. The 'V', the steel hoop and the worn-red look so great and complete the miniature.
In all, the Vostrayon Radio Operator by Penguin receives a 9.1/10.
