Ainu's Mini of the Week - Darkelve Princess By goatman

Well, what can I say. This week's top mini is by Goatman, and has everything needed to make a miniature a winner. A freehand banner, a practically scratchbuilt model, and of course, an amazing paintjob.

The sculpting seems literally flawless, as flaws seem nonexistant. Everything is done realistically (in the fantasy sense, of course) and it seems so right. It's hard to describe in words, besides perfect.

The paintjob is gorgeous, the skintone is amazing, and seems very real, even though it's far different from any human's actual skin. And the freehand runes are smooth and definetly a prominent feature on this miniature. The NMM seems a little dull and unrealistic in some places, such as on the top of the banner (which may be painted as stone, though I'm not too sure). The NMM on the Princess' helmet is excellent, however. I think that the dragon could have been 'brought out' a bit more, maybe with more dramatic highlights on the purple body, but then it may appear too flashy.

I especially love the base, as it is interesting to look at, and isn't something too simple as too many bases are nowadays. The multiple levels of rock, the dead High Elf, and the plants make it awesome and interesting to look at.

The freehand on the banner is amazingly executed, but I feel that it's a bit too flashy and doesn't fit in so much with the rest of the mini, which relates to Goatman's comment on how the GD judges said he would have taken the sword if he kept the axe on it.

All in all, this miniature receives a 9.9/10 from me. Congrats on the gold in WHFB Single, Goatman.

I'll take this time to note that this is my last column on the top mini's of the week, as I'm now doing articles on miniatures that don't get enough recognition. I thought of this as I realised that, obviously, the top mini's are going to get more coverage anyways. So next week, you will be reading a very different column from me.

A truly inspiring mini

Goatman is one of my favorite artists. That said, I must offer up this one bit of critcism. The wood used on this figure appears to be poorly finished. It is glossed, yes, but the wood grain is very evident in the photo and looks rough. Thes are probably craft store bought unfinished pine bases, which don\'t do the mini justice. Everything else is top notch, but the wood is disappointing. On a positive note, I do like the creative plinth between the two wooden components. Quite original. The bases used for display and contest minis has become a a focal point for me since I started competing in Historical shows where attention to such details in critical. A poor display base can mean the difference between a gold medal and a silver or a bronze. Any other opinions?
