Ainu's Mini of the Week:Demon Prince By Sergus

The first week of January 2007, and I've got a great model (among many other submissions) that has stood out as it displays fantastic, and certainly inspirational sculpting.

One aspects of sculpting that is often practiced and researched the most is anatomy. After all, the aim (most of the time) is to get a miniature that looks as real as possible with the pose and overall authenticity. Which is why I'm showcasing Sergus' 100% scratch-built Demon Prince, with the hope that more people will see this article than will be browsing through the forums for new entries to the CMoN gallery.

Sergus' anatomy practice model is an ideal figure to work off of when sculpting musculature and for pure inspiration. I've even begun work on a scratch-built piece, and this mini is a huge help.

What stands out to me when I look at the Demon Prince is the simply evil incarnate, all-powerful pose about him and also the accurate musculature elaborated upon earlier, which form a base of horrific realism.

Working with GS (Green Stuff) can be difficult, especially when creating armour, due to the roundness that GS when compared to it's Brown counterpart. You have got to appreciate this sculpt far more knowing this, I know that I do.

The face also looks notable, but unfortunately there are no close-ups of it given. Two other regions that could use closer shots are the details on his bracer and the axe head, for the fine designs appear to be elaborate beyond belief.

The only point on the model that does not seem entirely right or at par with the rest of the mini is the right hand/arm. Firstly, the positioning does not seem 'right', as in, unnatural according to the human anatomy (daemonic anatomies are only slightly different, with the head, and lower body). Secondly, the fingers and it's claws resemble mushrooms more than what they are meant to. The concept is there, but the execution just isn't quite up to the same quality.

Overall, this is a stunning sculpt, and I think that every hobbyist reading this should take some time to review it themselves, to learn from and to be inspired at the same time.

Ainu's Mini of the Week: Demon Prince By Sergus receives 9.0/10.

Yep saw this one when I was doing the browse. Apparently only his 4th sculpt. Not bad for that. A few areas that standout tho are the right lower leg is arched too much and the right hand just doent do it for me. Otherwise this is a superb sculpt and you can expect alot from this guy if he continues.
