With the end of 2006 and the dawn of 200, CMoN have seen the arrival of Lan Studio, a new artist submitting successive micro masterpieces. This week's showcase is no different, displaying strong contrast and a refreshing variation on GW's colour scheme.
What is particularily special about this Lan's High Elf Lord is how blue is used widely, the scale mail, the base, the shield, and the helmet, yet the appearance isn't of an overly-cartoony miniature, but one of strong composition. I think that the blue 'ties' much of the model together, which is why it works so well.
In addition to the blue, there are the clear elven runes masterfully painted along the cloak, shield, and base, adding a hint of magic to the piece befitting a high elf well. Use of NMM also works very well for the image of an immortal fantasy warrior, and Lan Studio does a fantastic job of getting the gold and silver to sparkle and shine as well as 'true' metallics. How Lan got the breastplate to appear as true metal is beyond me.
But it isn't all painted to this standard, the sand-coloured block isn't all that appealing, and luckily the 'water' covers this up for the most part. The elf's hair is sadly quite weak as the colour is almost exclusively white with grey for shading. This lets down the model as there isn't much variation in the white, making the hair, well, boring. The reason this bothers me so much is because there is some excellent zenithal lighting used on the tabard, so if the same comittment was shown to the hair it would be quite a bit more professional, as a studio miniature should be.
Among the weaker points of this figure is some of the blending on the blue and some highlighting/shading oppurtunities (ie. on the cloak) that haven't been taken advantage of. There is something about the sword that does not seem quite right, and it seems to be the sudden whites for reflections and lack of blending. What would work here, and 'fit' this rendition of the High Elf Lord would be to tint it with light blue and maybe a little purple to add a new element to the figure.
In restrospect, this is a fine studio miniature with a lot to show for itself and Lan's skill, but it isn't up to it's full potential with some areas that aren't up to the rest of the model's standard.
High Elf Lord By Lan Studio receives: 8.7/10.
