This week around, during my stroll through the most recent gallery entries, I came across Starks333's Imperial Psyker sitting at 5.8. As quite a few other forumites, I have been watching Starks' WIP thread and a 5.8 does not do this paintjob justice.
Especially considering that it's Starks' 4th ever miniature.
What I think users should notice is the dark mood of a polluted world in the 41st millenium that Starks333 captured with this rather simple miniature. As I've stated before: My favourite miniatures are those that evoke a fitting mood, and have realism, though style other styles can be just as impressive if executed well.
And the artist has done so here, even with the steel NMM which looks authentic from different angles.
The points that could be improved include the gold NMM, which seems too bright, with not enough dark areas and one or two brightest points, and the purple Imperial eagle, which seems out of place. I feel that the eagle, though in the style and 'mood' of the rest of the miniature, would be better to be all gold or steel. But that is just personal preference...
There are three other sections of the Pskyer that I really can appreciate and the first is the cloak. The way that Starks basecoated with brown on a green cloak may seem simple and very effective, but the idea of basecoating with a more natural colour either than green is a great way to go about painting fabric early on. I know that it took me about a year and a half to think along those lines!
The second 'high-point' is the base, dark, blasted, grey tiles that contribute to the miniatures overall presentation and mood, which is very important as I've already written numerously.
And a third point, that is fairly hard to comment on due to the camera angles, is the head/face. I really like how the face was done in a kind of sickly-green, it looks perfect.
Ainu's Mini of the Week: Imperial Pskyer by Starks333 receives 8/10.
Here's to higher scores for Starks!
