Ainu's Mini of the Week: Supreme Grand Commander Azrael of the Dark Angels by demonherald
This week I have decided to pick a very contrasting selection when compared to B11's Templar Knight, which is Supreme Grand Commander Azrael of the Dark Angels. This is a favourite sculpt of many 40k players because of the inspiring pose struck by Azrael and his minute helmet bearer which is characterful in itself.
The paramount detail that this miniature showcases is the use of 3 light-sources, normal daylight, or most likely night (as the glow of the lava and power sword are so great), the red-orange hue of lava, and of course the cool blue of Azrael's power sword.
I noticed that demonherald thanked Shawn for his OSL classroom, and so I would also like to thank him for bringing his knowledge and experience with OSL to the miniature painting community. I'm sure that many artists here, such as demonherald and TABStudios wouldn't have gone as far and as well with OSL without Shawn.
Back to the mini...
The power sword is the second of three high points (the first being the multiple light-sources pulled off with considerably great skill) on this Dark Angel duo that I would like to highlight. This is surely one of the best renditions of a power sword that I have had the pleasure to see, because of the icy, yet futuristic look and aura of it.
The way that both edges of the blade were painted very brightly at the top is different from most weapons realisticly (RMM or NMM) as there would typically be one lighter edge, and the other would be a darker side. But on this miniature, it works. The sword appears to have a glow of it's own, and isn't following any reflective rules that steel would go by, making it what a power sword should be.
Then there is my third of three favourite details, the banner. Fantastic freehand such as this is hard enough, but incorporating OSL into the mix is something else. I don't have much to say about this, besides bravo demonherald! You've pulled off quite a feat of skill.
As for my critique, the frontal tabard of both Azrael and the helmet-bearer's robe appear washed out, and could use some more powerful highlights or darker areas (specifically on Azrael's tabard, while the helmet-bearer could use some brightening of the red-orange OSL to 'bring it out' a little bit more).
Demonherald, you will have to work hard to top this submission.
Ainu's Mini of the Week: Supreme Grand Commander Azrael of the Dark Angels by demonherald receives 8.8/10.
