Ainu's Mini of the Week: Virago by Mathieul

This week's showcase is of Mathieul's Virago, another spectactular Illyad sculpt that Mathieul has taken to the next level. Unusual colour combinations, namely the use of greys, reds, and greens for the skin, that work together to create a mystical and dark ambiance befitting the sculpt.

A second strong point is the interesting lighting used. Lighting is a powerful tool to any painter, novice or experienced, and Mathieul's application of this difficult technique is so fine as Virago appears to actually be in a dim forest, which was likely his intention. Mathieul's use of painted-on lighting is best demonstrated by Virago's thigh and the loin-cloth. It gives the model such a strange appearance that seems realistic, but still a fantasy miniature in it's own right. The mood exuded from Virago is so strong, making this week's showcase exceptionally different.

But as much as mood and lighting go hand-in-hand, they would be nothing without blending Mathieul's blending, that from every angle looks flawless. That is, except for the mohawk, which doesn't look as if much attention was paid to it. The fur pelt, however, is brilliant. Whoever thought that greens and blues would work with brown and still make it identifiable as fur? The results are simply stellar.

Virago's eyes and face complete the mini's appearance, granting it a cold-hearted stare, unyielding in it's intent on piercing through one's soul. The face complements the eyes with cool, muted tones and the subtleness of it all is as malevolent as if it is well-painted.

Lastly, there's the base, unique beyond measure, with a crooked tree and more muted colours on the ground.

Virago By mathieul receives: 9.4/10.
