AMotW: Alice in Wonder Hill By Poupee Canope

CoolMiniorNot's top fantasy miniature painter, Poupee Canope, has introduced a figure that scores highly on so many different levels. The technicalities are dead on, subtle lighting that interacts with the different surfaces (hair, skin, and clothing), detail painting, and terrific blending throughout.

I realise that there must be techniques employed by Poupee which I can't even comprehend, both in painting and far more in sculpting. Poupee Canope's expertise and intricate sculpting combine with the de-saturated painting style, forming a disturbing ambiance. The proportions on this figure are visibly closer to life than what most miniature companies produce, which increases the realism factor, which in turn adds to the troubling nature of the piece.

As the artist points out, the idea of a twisted Alice isn't new, but I would like to add that Poupee’s recreation of Alice, with an even darker theme, worked. It worked so well, in fact, that the sadism on Alice's face is strikingly evident, and is easily enough to unnerve the Queen of Hearts herself.

What really entices me, is not purely the ambiance, but the characterful details found in the base, which is tiled, and unnaturally curved, reminding me of an alternate dimension, where what is real is warped beyond our definition of reality. The metal emerging from where Alice's elbow is just as eerie and the blade it attaches to displays metallics that cannot be matched by many. The small splatters of blood and gore have been applied masterfully, and seem to be painted as if many Alice took many slashes and jabs at the White Rabbit, an unsettling, and fitting thought.

In retrospect, this is absolutely one of the best miniatures I've ever reviewed, and I eagerly look ahead to Poupee's next submission. Kudos to Poupee Canope for taking Gold in Wyrd Miniatures ‘Femme Fatale II’ painting competition with this very model. Excellent sculpt, and unbelievable painting!

AMotW: Alice in Wonderhill by Poupee Canope receives 9.8/10.

Nice coverage

Your writing is developing very nicely.
I enjoy reading your coverage.

You give a nice tribute and, more importantly, add a little something to the
already awesome presentation of a seriously ass-kicking figure.

Figure added to my favorites.

WOW Ainu, thanks for your uber-kind words... I\'m really touched by your review

technically my Alice is far from what I aimed for, but I\'m just hapy if all in all she manage to communicate something.

Thanks again.

Great article ainu!

Poupeè is my favourite artist in the world... i admire his talent, his works and the passion he put in every piece...

He was a great painter, the best on my opinion, but this last year he became also one of the most incredible sculptor i\'ve seen in my life... his sad girl is a work of art, and this alice is incredibly detailed and almost alive...

He\'s a genious, an artist at 360 degrees... but also a dear friend and a very special and kind person!
I\'m very happy for you Emanuele!

(And also for me, she\'s the most important piece in my collection! And i\'m proud and proud of her!!! :) )

@TyronMagda - I think Poupee\'s works (especially the sculpts) are special because of the \'real\' emotions. It\'s not all open mouths and raised swords, but it\'s more subtle, namely the sadistic nature of Alice and the posture of sad girl, like TyronMagda said.

I hope that my review will bring people to understand more about miniature art, and I\'m glad how many people enjoyed this week\'s feature. Thanks again to Poupee for contributing these wonderful figures to CMoN, even if we can only experience them through photographs.

Poupee is a girl, I thought...

And a VERY nice one, I must add...:)...

I think she is one of the Best in the world, without exaggeration... I love all her work and when she put her work on the same week as I did with my Diorama, I felt really honoured to be defeaded only by her...:)...

@ Poupee

Will you be in Paris at GD this year...??...

Yeah, one of CMON\'s best artists has done it again with this one, I voted 10. Although the painting on this is not as good as previous examples, the sculpt is great.

lol Matt, except last minute changes, I think I\'m definitely a man... and also a rude one ! lol

as for the GD, you know the GW stuff isn\'t my cup of tea... and considering at this rhythm I manage to finish only one mini every six months, it\'s already too late for me to start thinking to something now.

so I have to decline for this year... but I\'m going a bit OT... ;)

see you,
Emanuele

This reminds me of a \"black light theatre\" show I watched in Prague. It was also Alice with a darker, more mature twist. By mature I mean they were nude on the stage. ??? I\'m not complaining though as the girl who played Alice was incredibly hot :)

On topic though, it\'s an absolutely beautiful miniature. I\'m very impressed.

Good, the best artists always find ways to keep their public confused, keep them on their toes, err...
Great work mr./ms. lol
