This week's feature is demonherald's magnificently painted Land Raider, an absolute no-brainer for an article. What is so alluring about this particular model is the variety of designs from stylized imperial eagles to the Ultramarine logo, and the vehicle's tracks are reflective of a war-torn future, which are the very essence of 40k.
Demonherald has done it again.
One of the harder aspects of freehand painting is what you paint, and the use of colouring. I almost completely avoid attempts at painting blue freehand over a blue background, considering the difficulty involved in shading and the myriad of technicalities. But here, demonherald has surpassed the difficulties in painting freely, with some excellent designs and accurate shading. In this way, the background is distinguishable and has considerable contrast to the freehand paintwork.
The battle damage is flawless, as far as I can tell from these pictures. Rust and dulled metals have been applied accurately and appropriately, and the tracks appear as authentic as one can get with a plastic body and acrylic paints (and perhaps a little modeling putty here and there). I am hoping for some insight for the flecks of dried mud near the lower hull.
There are so many stand out details here, and there seems to be a lack of weak points, making it a hard model to critique. Still, the transition on the scorched lascannon barrel to red isn't so subtle as the rest of the model, which brings me to the OSL.
The close-ups show that the twin headlights seem to have the light-sourcing painted a little too dimly, at least when compared to the smaller light beside aside the built-in storm bolter gun (at centre).
And lastly, I find the colours to be a little too cartoony for my tastes; what with the tank being manned in by superhuman warriors in the war-torn, but that is just my personal opinion. After all, traditional marines were blue, red, and gold; and the green complements the blue and red well, especially since demonherald went along the 'brighter' route.
All told, this is surely demonherald's best CMoN submission yet, and it has been a pleasure reviewing it.
AMotW: Freehand Ultramarines Land Raider By demonherald receives 9.2/10.
