Any telephone engineers out there...?

Our home phone line is currently broken, and, as such I\'m having to resort to visiting the local library to get online, and as such, can\'t do a lot due to restrictions, etc

We can\'t afford to call BT out to repair, and it seems a waste as it\'s just 1 wire that\'s come loose.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of fitting and/or repairing standard UK phone lines who could help;

The wire is orange (No banding that I can see)

Also, apparently, a particular tool is required to refit the wire - anyone have any idea where they can be bought?

Maplins.
if it\'s a standard 4 slot type it\'s a smple push the wire in the open slot.
But please note I\'m not a telephone engineer. :)

Cheers DR, dunno about it being a standard 4 slot thingy - I think it has 6, or 8 - I can\'t remember. More than 4 though.

If more information is needed I can get it.

Is the orange wire actually cut in two? or has it just slipped loose from the wire connector box?

The connector box that DR shows seems to indicate the only tool they use for seating the wire is one that pushes the wire down into the groove. Most likely there are some teeth in the connector that make the copper contact and hold the wire firmly.

If you can\' push it in with your fingers, try the corner of a credit card. Just lay the wire in the slot and press it down. I wouldn\'t jab a screwdriver or anything as you may ruin the teeth inside...then it will not make connection at all.

If the orange wire is snapped in two, you can try and strip back a bit of the insulation and then just twist the metal together. Electricials tape can hold it. Most likely that will only be a temp fix, as moisture will def. get inside there.

I\'ve been a telephone repairmen for years!! The BT stuff looks very foriegn to me, our stuff is a bit differently laid out, but the theory is all the same.

I\'m just curious to know which part of the wire is broken...if it is the BT wire coming to the junction box, I\'m surprised they\'d charge you for that.

I have some pictures that I took, but can\'t use a hosting site due to library restrictions... I\'ll ask a friend to post it here... Watch this space...

Looks like the friend I emailed has been busy over the holidays :p lol

Never mind - I\'ve found somewhere to upload them temporarily...

Do you get any ring tone if you plug directly into the master socket? There should be a test socket inside the master socket if you open it up.

All i would suggest is look at which way the bale is naturally bent, as that should at least tell you which side it fell out of.
I also found you this site which may help you (as my knowledge is not wiring but use of the test socket lol)
