Army creation -Mixed List or focus on specific units

Hey. Till know I only have the stark starter set units. Playing against people who bought 2x kickstarter became quite frustrating as they really focused their Lennister armies by deploying only 2 types of units but in double or triple, perfectly supported by best fitting commanders and NCUs. This brought me to the question if playing mixed army lists can even be successful against really focused ones?
Probably this is a no brainer for most here, but I am quite new to this type of games.

What do you think?

I honestly think that ANY strategy can be countered with the right tactics. If your opponents love playing that way and it seems insurmountable at the moment, just remember that they are stuck into one style of playing, where as you have more flexibility. Play a few games with them and learn how they typically respond to your units. I bet that eventually you'll find successes/strategies/combos that you can build upon and will cause them to rethink their own game plan!

Do you want to give some examples of what you are having a hard time overcoming so that fellow players here can give you some ideas? Does your group allow proxies? Some will and some won't. I find that the the ones that WON'T are directly or indirectly holding you back from playing to your true potential. I know this is a red-hot topic for many people but I don't DISALLOW anyone from playing proxies in friendly games because not everyone has the means to get the wanted units. So long as they have been released and their rules/stats/costs etc are readily available, I say go for it; have fun! Doing so will help you decide what works for you the best and what you will buy when you can. :)

Hey. Good point about the flexibility. I just have to play play play to get more insights. Hopefully I will master flexible armies as I find it more exciting than having only one or two type of units. An the other hand future will show if there are more diverse units supporting a certain play style and tactics.

Cheers

How many points do you play normally?
(for more specific advice)

Anyhow; I formly believe that mixed armies can do well.
I did very well last weekend with 2x Zerkers, outriders and 2 swornswords plus 2x NCU.
(slight variations but these were always in the army)

I would call this already specialized army, only 3 different combat units. Unless the attachment made them extremely variant.

Let's agree to disagree. It is basically the coreset units plus one berserker extra.
In both variations of this army were:
Howland Reed as a commander/NCU, 2x swornsword captains and Catelyn as an NCU.

Option 1 saw Robb Stark (+Grey Wind) as a unit attachement, the other had Sansa as a 3rd NCU.
I preferrred the version with Robb more I think.
On the basis of a mere 3 games so make of this what you want.
