Temperance, you're absolutely right. I appreciate your additions and completely agree. 
I wanted to write an article with some tips and suggestions, but since I'm a newbie I figured I'd better stick with something that I have some credibility on. Unfortunately, it backfired, because my lowest-scoring mini recently reached 4.3. *sigh*
Maybe in a few weeks I can post a mini that will give me some credibility with a slightly more constructive set of tips.

Yeah, I don't know if I can trust anyone who doesn't have any figures at or below a 4.

Yikes, Rene, give me at least a full year painting before you condemn me to mediocrity forever!
Actually, a great deal of my living is made writing business documents--instructions, procedures, etc. Not especially amusing stuff, but useful.
steelcult, I'm sorry if your keyboard got wet. I hope it wasn't fatal--I guess not, or you wouldn't have commented.
vincegamer, I saw a few of your mystery minis, and you're right, they are excellent examples of the 'cheap brush' strategy.
I'm glad the responses have been so positive, regardless of the scores. When I submitted the article, I suddenly had visions of hordes of offended cruddy/newbie painters out for my blood.

*lol* Now I'll go off painting some good ole blob.
Thank you, at the end of a Garbage Monday at work this has lightened my mood. I can now look forward to the drive home with a smile on my face, ready to paint my mini's with brushes made from the grooming hair remains of my dog. A perfect 4.0 or less is on the cards.

Pictures! I wanted to see pictures!!! How can I know if I'm doing it right without pics to guide me?!?! If I get a 3.0 or a 5.0 I'm going to be seriously pissed.
