Ashlynn D\'Elyse ... anime style? (completed)

LGS has a 20% off sale last night, so I went and picked up a couple blisters. Here is one of them...

Her face seemed awfully wide and flat as I basecoated, but I couldn\'t figure out why that \"look\" was familiar. After outlinging the eyes, she took on a serious anime look, so I just went with it. The face is rather flat in color, but I\'m not really sure where to take it from here. I wanted a light skintone, so elf flesh is the darkest tone used (except for a little tanned flesh under the jawline. I\'ll probably remove it... it makes her look like someone runned dandelions under her chin.) The highlights on the face are reaper linen white/vgc elf flesh. The hair is vgc cobra leather, vgc khaki highlight, vgc bonewhite highlight, yellow ink wash, re-highlight small bit of khaki, then more bonewhite.

The pose was so dramatic that I couldn\'t just sit her on a flat base. Where minis find dramatic rock outcroppings to stand on all the time is a mystery...

They\'ve been to Yorkshire, Cumbria and Derbyshire. lol

I like the simplicity of the face in this, Clean highlighting and smooth shape does suggest an Anime style of painting.
I\'m looking forward to seeing more pictures.

I\'d quote Dragonsreach here - I think he really said it all. And given that you\'re going for an anime look I think the face is fantastic. Great job on the eyes especially.

Tonight\'s work was getting started on the armor. I\'m not an NMM painter, so it\'s reaper \"shadowed steel\" and \"polished silver\" for me. Once I feel comfortable with MM, I\'m go NMM. Anyhoo, I highlighted up from shadowed steel, but it just didn\'t feel shiny yet, so I added some very light blue (vgc electric blue + white) to the silver and highlighted speculars with that. So now I\'m semi-metallic metal, I suppose. It isn\'t as smooth in the photo as it looks under the lamp... I wish my eyes were as good as that cheap camera. :D

The cloak is basecoated vgc night blue, and that will be the darkest color there. I\'m still not sure what do do with her frilly bloomers. In the anime tradition, I might do the white panty thing with the uppermost portions of the leg painted as flesh. Would that be too over the top?

I really like clean style painting, and that face says it all! Keep up the good work. You might try blacklining the mouth (the thinnest, smallest line possible) I think it would define it better.

Further along. Thanks for the suggestion, TaintedBrush. I wasn\'t able to darkline along the lips (I don\'t have that sort of precision, I\'m afraid) but I added a little shading under each lip, and it seems to give the face a little more depth.

I decided to go with the bare upper thighs and white panties. If you\'re going to paint anime, you might as well make it authentic. ;)

This thing Cries anime! The face the sword and the armour all pointers.
I really like it!! And the direction was a great choice too :)

I absolutely love the way the face has turned out, but it doesn\'t sit right with the rest of the mini for me. the hair doesn\'t look right with it.
Have you looked at the way the animee people do hair? I think it\'s all smooth, with little colour variation which I guess isn\'t compatable with the sculpt.
it\'s only a tiny fly in the ointment, over all looks good.

Good point! I thought there ws something a liiitle off but I couldn\'t place it!
Try the hair anime style too, dark with a highlight sheen. Now that would be cooking on gas!!! :)

After a couple night off (meaning I passed out at 10pm) I have painted more!

Thanks for the hair suggestion, and I know the high contrast effect to which you are referring, but I want to retain that uneven, dirty blonde hair shown in the fluff art. (I know.... staying true to source after I\'ve painted her as anime. Go figure.) I did find some dirty blonde anime examples, and ended putting a ring of lighter highlights around her head about 3/4 of the way up to mimic the examples.

The challenge in photographing this gal is depth of field. My camera doesn\'t have high enough resolution to sit back a ways and get a nice, clear shot of her, then zoom in the paint program and have much information to work with.

I decided to wrap her up and call it done.

I added a little freehand on the back, and posted her on eBay. Hopefully she\'ll fund the next couple minis. :D

I haven\'t put her up for voting yet.
EDIT: up for voting http://www.coolminiornot.com/139643
EDIT #2: ...and I am getting pwned on the voting.
EDIT #3: Whew. The low scores were a short term anomaly. She\'s running low-mid 6\'s. About what I expected.
