Attn Coffin Dodgers - Comments on Bifocals Wanted

I\'ve just returned from a day of eye examination and ordering new glasses. This included admitting that my near vision is not what it once was, and deciding to try bifocals. While my problems as yet are fairly mild, it was made pretty clear to me that I\'m just going to go on getting older and more useless, so I might just as well try getting used to them now.

I\'m just wondering if any of you out there who are a little further down the coffin dodger track might have any advice on getting used to wearing bifocals, both for painting and general life. I use an Optivisor magnifier for painting (and prepping, and pretty much everything really). On the one hand, I\'m hopeful that maybe the bifocals will let me do a little more without it. But on the other hand, I\'m worried I\'ll hate the damn things and never get used to them...

The younger you start this hobby, the sooner in life you will need better glasses.
I\'m still (Barely) fortunate to be wearing the same lenses (well, same prescription) that I wore at age 12. BUT, I know that sooner or later I\'ll be a crow with spectacles on the bridge of my nose too.

When working with the wee figures, you\'ll have to force yourself to get used to them.

My mother, aunt, and grandmother all wear them now. and they are easier to get used to in daily habitiul life, but hard to include in the things you enjoy. ( my mom, and aunt was reading, my grandma was sewing.)

Hey Wren as a Coffin Dodger of long standing (but not with these knees) I can seriously say I don\'t use Bifocals.

Due to the nature of my work I need to have clear Central Vision when poking around inside Computers/Servers and Bifocals wouldn\'t give me the comfort needed to carry out my work for long periods. Bifocals would cause me to only have half the clarity of vision, and if you\'re hunting for Jumper switches (2mm square) that you\'ve dropped (regular occurance) everything helps.

I find that using ordinary Reading glasses for painting is great, I get a clearer view and am able to hold my body position in a confortable manner for long stretches of painting.


But anyhow As Ebon Says \"Don\'t sweat it\", you choose what you are comfortable with.

Or you could try good eye hygiene... every 20 minutes or so you need to look into the distance for a few seconds, like more than 5 meters away say out the window or something. Helps keep the eyes in good nick, as well as there are a number of eye exercises you can do to help.

Wren, like Mike, I don\'t wear bifocals. I\'m looking at a monitor most of the day and don\'t need the neck pain that using bifocals would cause.

My wife tried some no-line bifocals. Had 3 fender benders in about a month. Took them off and got 2 pair of glasses.

Jesterz, painting minis seems to make my far-sightedness worse. I can lay a newspaper on the floor, stand up and read it - comfortably. But my arms are just too short to hold onto it and read it without glasses. (Grumb was having great fun with that last week when he was here.. holding my menu across the table for me. )

I have all kinds of glasses.....bifocals, reading, Optivisor magnifier and clip on magnifiers.

Everyone is right about bifocals and trying to look at a computer, gave me a headache in no time flat, but I had a special pair of glasses made with only the close range and that took care of the problem.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I spend a fair amount of time looking at a computer, so I\'m a little concerned to hear people don\'t much like them for that. I\'m near-sighted enough that I don\'t think having two pairs of glasses will work. I\'ve already tried painting with my glasses off, and I can see the mini just fine, but finding the rinse water and the palette can be challenging. ;-> I\'m also a little concerned about the fender bender potential. Sometimes it sucks being the only driver in the house...

I got the glasses at Lenscrafters, and happily they have a 30 day guarantee. So I\'m going to give it 3-4 weeks (once I get them, they had to order away) to see if I can adjust, and if I can\'t I\'ll go back in and have the glasses remade with single vision lenses and dig up my husband\'s clip on magnifiers for other stuff.

Oh, and I asked the doctor about whether I was causing/accelerating the damage due to a hobby with a lot of near work, and she said you could tire your eyes out for a day doing stuff like that, but it wouldn\'t have a long term effect. Course researchers change their minds all the time on that kind of thing, so who knows.
