If it\'s ££££££\'s or $$$$$$\'s you want.....

....don\'t paint minis! I tried it for a while and found myself POOR and bored with one of my favourite pastimes! If you do give it a go, make sure you work out a decent hourly rate of work/cash and stick to it!!

If your goal is simply more money, then you\'re better off investing in real estate or land development. Or perhaps a job in fast food. Seriously. :)

I\'ve never worked at a games company (well, not as a miniature painter, anyway -- in fact, not even at a games company that would be relevant to miniatures, but I digress). I understand that they pay very little for painting. Commission work from the top artists, if done on a regular basis however, is certain to be a greater amount than the salaries paid to staff painters. Take a look at the top ten on this site arranged by auction price.

The key problem to making money with painted miniatures is time invested. In a time versus earnings comparision, painting a single miniature tends to break down to less than minimium wage per hour. Therefore, painting one miniature at a time is simply not a good means of earning money. You have to improve the time versus earnings ratio while retaining a standard of high quality work.

For efficiency\'s sake, I usually have upwards of ten or twelve miniatures being worked on at once. While it takes longer to complete all of these than it would to complete a single figure, the ratio of time versus completion per figure actually drops significantly. On the extreme side of things, try painting a single fantasy figure and time yourself. Then paint an entire 40K squad and time yourself. You should find that the time to paint the squad is only a couple of hours more than painting the single figure, yet you have finished ten times as many figures.

Another key issue is getting known for doing good figures -- not necessarily online, or through winning a Golden Demon though that certainly helps. Just about all of my commission work at the moment is \"merely\" local, and it\'s been steadily increasing lately.

thanks CMONers :)
I know my speed and how quick i can paint. i was just wondering if when you work for some company you are payed better than for commissions.
now i see that rather not :D (at least if you are beginner ).
other thing is that 8£k / annum is not much when you live ie. in UK or USA.
I\'m from Poland and 700£ per month is twice the average salary dowh here ...

It\'s all relative to the cost of goods...

A pint of beer at my local is nearly 3 pounds ($5.3) and 20 cigarettes is 5 pounds ($9). So although UK salaries might sound big/bigger they don\'t actually buy you an awful lot:(

i understand the difference between cost of life here in poland and in uk. here beer cost 3pln (50p) and pack of cigarettes is 5pln (80p)
minimal wage in uk is around 700£ i think.
minimal wage in poland is 700 pln.
1pln = 6.5£

now you can see that when i live in poland and taking commissions from uk or usa i can live very well from that.
the problem is to get the commissions, money transfers and few other.
so maybe someone want me to paint something? :D i will be aprieciate

@ Yaro: What Mike said. wage for most full time inhouse painters will be between £800-£11.00....ever...no salary raises above that, no future prospects. don\'t forget that you\'ll have to move to the country where the company is located, and pay living axpenses that are normal for that country. you\'re better off doing freelance work from Poland, and selling on Ebay. I know some painters gfrom russia and thereabouts that live quite luxuriosly off a painter\'s income...unlike me ;) Maybe I should move to the Balkan.....

I think the biggest problem is money transfer...

Most people use PayPal and I don\'t believe that is available in Poland yet. Very frustrating, because I have been unable to bid on eBay items because I refuse to open up yet another account.

That\'s the problem... a proper job to pay the bills, another job to buy the minis and no time to paint what you wantlollol
