Diorama Colour Palette

I\'m working on my first major diorama, and having some colour dilemmas. The scene is to be a palace-type interior, heavily decorated and incorporating a lot of colour. I haven\'t made a final decision yet, but I\'m leaning to the main wall colour being ochre, main accent colour of a dark beryl green, with additional accents of crimson red and goldish-yellow and a lighter green. The floor would likely pick up those colours, probably minus the red, and there are some white marble (so gray scale) scenic elements.

My question is what to do for colours with the figures. If I use different colours, would the whole thing look garish? If I use similar colours, will they just blend into the background or look like they\'re wearing pop group costumes?

I was thinking of picking one of the scenic colours as a main colour for each of the figures, but most of them are wearing clothes with layers or different pieces, and I\'m lost about what to use for additional colours. (I figure I won\'t use the ochre on any figures, though.)

Any tips people have would be most welcome!

A question you need to answer is what is the focus of the diorama? If you\'re trying to tell a story, then the colors for all of the elements should hopefully, help draw the eye to the main elements.

The palace interior itself, is not the story, but the setting. So, I\'d be inclined to paint the interior w/ slightly more faded colors so that the colors of the figures stood out a bit more.

I noticed that purple was not amongst your interior color choices. That would seem a great color for the palace inhabitants ... maybe a king or queen in a nice deep purple w/ attendants in more muted tones. They\'d all be pulled together and help sell the setting as a palace w/ the royal purple.

Don\'t know if that\'s what you had in mind, but that\'s where I headed after I read your description.

I hope this helps,

Sounds spectacular....

...Wow, your diorama sounds as though it will super....can\'t wait to see the finished product. You\'re just a little tease!:p

I like sivousplay\'s idea of adding some regal purple as that will bring the focus more to the figures. It will also look stunning with the muted ochres, golden yellows and chosen greens without appearing garish. Rich burgendy might also be effective. I love the white marble idea too!

Now that I have conjured a detailed diorama in my head, I\'m wondering how close I\'ll come to your actual piece.

Please let us know when it\'s available for viewing!!
