Are you entering anything in the painting comp? I\'m still trying to trick someone into coming up with me from San Diego. Driving alone sucks!:cussing:

I don\'t think I\'ll have anything done in time. : / I am planning on mostly doing RPGs this year anyway. : ) I want to try and get into a workshop or two though. The GenCon painting workshops have always been really good. And the speed painting comps......OK, so maybee more like 50/50 minis/RPGs. : )

I have one entry...my Celestine is almost done! Do they have sculpting classes there? I would like to check out some of those painting classes as well!

I think I saw a sculpting seminar. You can check out the schedules on the website...under events, it\'s an XL sheet you can download. The workshops are at the bottom if I remember correctly.

Yep, Matt Gubser is holding a few sculpting seminars. Not to be missed!

I\'ll be there. Hope to hang at painting events a bit, but spending most of the time with the Dark Age staff running demos and tournaments.

:D:DAhhhh, I have taken lessons from Matt at Ork Con. He is a good teacher. I\'ll definately have to do that. I hope his dvd has come out so I can buy it there. Last time I talked to him it was in the works.

Hey Katie, you didn\'t work in an old tavern on Long Island in 1999?...that would be too weird! How do you like San Diego? Anyways I will definately swing by the speed painting and say hi as well as the Dark Age booth and say hi to Wayne. See you all there.

Nope, not me, I was in Manhattan :) I grew up in San Diego, so I must like it to have come back :)

I\'ll be attending -- solely for the painting & sculpting events on Thursday, Friday and Sunday -- but I won\'t have anything for the main competition. Life just got in the way and I ran out of time.

Saturday is reserved for the Michigan-Ohio State game; there are priorities, after all!

Well, I just got back from my first GenCon experience and I must say it was a lot of fun. I met a bunch of cmoners, learned to paint a model in an hour!
PaintandTake.jpg

Hung out with famous folk like the incredibly tallented Matt Grusber and Amy Brehm...was completly shocked when I turned a corner and was face to face with Alexi Z\'s minitures at the Dark Age booth. Let me tell you, she is a painting GOD. I am still stunned by her models.

As you are probably still stunned by my ugly mug!

It was really nice meeting Katie and Adrienne. Hopefully Katie will make it over to one of our friday night paint nights. BTW, thanks for the advice on making my model better Katie. I will definately work on the areas that you said I could improve on.
As for the painting contest, heres my version of how it went down.

Friday night 6:30pm:
Show up at Jonny Macos house for paint night ready to put the finishing touches on Celestine. Also add gloss coat varnish to wooden display base managing to spray more of my hand than the base! Hand stays sticky until next morning despite multiple washings! Paint night ends without a hitch. I pack up and go home. During trip home my Reaper case does an endo in the backseat of my truck and manages to break off Celetines arm. No problem, when I get home I will glue it back on.

Friday night 11:30pm:
Get home and start arm repairs...realize I dont have any glue! While looking frantically for glue I managed to knock Celestine off her wooden display base and break her cape off. She is now pretty much in as many pieces as when I got her.
Ready to cry, I deside to go to bed and wake up early, regroup, and try to fix her.

Saturday 6:00am:
Get up and start to fix Celestine. I repainted a couple of parts where the paint chipped due to the previous nights disasters and headed over to my friend Kurts house to get glue and then carpool up to Gen Con.

Saturday 8:00am:
Arrive at Kurts house and fix Celestine with massive amounts of wood glue and thumbtacks (thats Californian for super glue) Then we head up to Gen Con.

Saturday 11:00am:
Arrive at Gen Con...model is still in tact! We make our way throught the registration line and walk quickly over to the painting comp check in area. Quickly survey the compitition and make first attempt to turn in the model.:cussing:forgot the stupid tickets to enter the model! We then quickly walk back through all the people (who by now, I am sure our out to destroy my model) and sit in another line to get generic event tickets (2 of em). Now we walk back through the gauntlet of people, narrowly escaping a couple of collisions and head towards the painting comp check in table for a second time. At this point I see there is a girl in front of me and I set Celestine down next to her model on the check in tray. We both stand there for a couple of seconds and I\'m thinking holy crap, that is an amazing looking model and start to lean towards her model. At the same time she starts leaning towards my model, so we are kind of doing the cross lean action. At this point I say, \"Lets trade places\" The model I was looking at is one of the most amazing models I have seen in person. The painter is Amy Brehm and it was unbelievable! Needless to say, she came in first and I came in second and Celestine is now sitting at home in my display case all safe and sound!

Here are some of Amy\'s other models she had on display. She is really good folks...if you didn\'t already know.

Third place was a neked lady...sweet jesus!

All in all I had a great time and would definately do it again next year!

Many thanks to LeopardPixie, whom I had the pleasure of meeting, Katie G, whom I also met but not as CMoNers (I was the bald guy in the Jack Skellington hoodie who did a couple speed paints and sat next to you in a couple classes), and anyone else from the Sue Crew who happens to read this. GenCon SoCal was a great experience for me, devoted entirely to miniatures, and everyone who was teaching or otherwise helping out are who made it that way -- you all were extremely friendly, knowledgable and helpful. I definitely learned a lot and just hope I can find enough time (and stop being lazy long enough ;) ) to put it all to use!

And when I say entirely, I mean two two painting classes and a speed paint round on Thursday, five classes on Friday including sculpting and converting, a speed paint round on Saturday before having to leave the Con early, and two more classes on Sunday -- and I enjoyed every minute and appreciate every lesson I learned. Who knows? with as much time as I spent in the painting area, I might just take LP up on her suggestion, and find myself on the volunteer side of the tables next year... :)
