Anyone else up late playing the game?

DROOL. It goooood. :flip: Online registration was a beast today though, every geek in the world trying to get on Steam (Valve\'s online auth service) all at once. I think their servers melted. It took me ages just to auth to get the single player game started

Gee, I hope this doesn\'t affect my painting... :(

I have a few friends who want the game, but the whole downloading 20% of it from Steam is kind of putting them off. The joys of dial-up.

How long did it take to get the remainder of the game?

Corvus, but the problem is, and this might just be a vicious rumour, is that the game only ships with 78 % of the content, and you need to download ythe remainder.

Some sort of anti piracy measure.

To be honest NSA, I didn\'t really expect you to say \"Well, the game I\'ve been waiting for for 4 years absolutely sucks. I\'m going to shoot myself.\" lol

Screenshots look yummy ; my computer weeps.

I know, but that saves the time and bandwidth of downloading the other 22% :)

I understand that, but some of us have to deal with dial up connections, and even downloading as little as that is an annoyance.

I dunno, I half expected me to ;) (even if it had sucked I guess I would just drown my sorrows in hours of Unreal Tournament 2004)

I don\'t think it ships in-box with 22% missing - it IS 5 CD\'s after all! But you do NEED to connect to Steam before you can play even single-player. You enter the CD key, make a Steam account and it validates you. I don\'t think this is particularly high-bandwidth process, but yesterday it took forever because it was the release day and Valve\'s servers were really getting hammered. After it validates it \"unlocks\" the game files, which takes a while but I believe that\'s an offline process (decrypting the files).

If you bought a download of the game, THEN it only downloaded the last bits yesterday, I think.

You mean impossible. I was on dial-up early this year, and you can\'t download ANYTHING. Even surfing CMON was agonizingly slow sometimes. And forget online gaming (except maybe \"Bejeweled\").

a definate must have...

i was out of town all week for work, but back in the Hotel they had the \"tech channel\" which basically talks non-stop about computer/video games...

I caught the \"making of Half-Life 2\" and am really excited about it....I should wait for Christmas (so my wife has something to buy for me...) but what the hell....
