Here is my work in progress shot of my first LotR fig. I have really enjoyed painting this little guy but I got to the freehand and I am stumped. I am having problems getting the paint from the pallet to the figure without it drying on me. Especially with my fine detail brushes. Does anyone have any tips? Thanks. Of course any other comments you may have on the paintjob are welcome as well!

It\'s an usual problem....Maybe more environmental than technical...Depending howwarm the area you are painting in is could be ausing the drying especially as there are smaller amounts of paint on the brush....Have you tried Using a drying retarder??? Also try a brush like vallejo or Windsor and newton. They both hold a fair amount of paint that may help..

What you\'ve done so far is really nice The subtle freehand on the sleeve works really well.
The Hair is fatastic. The skin great and the colours of the robes different but work really well together..
I would say the only let down at the moment are the eyes..Lord of the rings models are a bitch for that..At the moment they are a little too stand out maybe a little less white would help..

other than that love it......

long hair on the brushes. maybe some acrylic retarder/ky?

and keep your palette close to the mini!

anyway, you seem to be doing well. although his eyes look a little wonky in the photo

ky as in ky jelly??? I used retarder but maybe I need more...I was just scared it wouldn\'t dry at all. The brushes I use are Vallejo. Maybe I can find some that have longer hairs. I\'ll keep working at it. As for the eyes, yes they do pop a bit....kind of reminds me of golum. Its not so bad IRL but I will glaze it a bit to pull them back into the mini. We\'ll see what happens. Now to work on the base!

yeah ky is used as a lubricant - ie it keeps stuff wet. it can therefore be used as a retarder. can\'t tell you how much to use though. as for normal retarder, there should be a guide on the side for how much to use. the stuff i have won\'t dry if you use more than 25% retarder

Well some simple tips for freehand is one make sure your using a high quality Kolinski sable brush. My current favorite is a Isabey 6227z size 0 or 00 which can be bought at Dick Blick.

That and really thin your paint.

Not sure about a retarder thats in the Gel form but a liquid retarder like that made by Liquitex called Slo-dry might be better. Its in the bottle with the orage lableand its clear not milky white.

Thanks Jeff. I\'ll have to try that as well. Here are some updated pics..with the base I just finished sculpting. The freehand on this one was done with a size 1 Vallejo brush. Also I am in the process of reworking the face. The guys at my paint night said the Golum eyes had to go and also the skin was too dark for elvin skin. Right now there is just a couple layers on the face and I already notice from the pics that one eye is lower than the other. I think this face is going to be the death of me! Oh well, I\'ll have to fix that tomorrow. Anyways, what do you think so far? I am very very open to suggestions!:D

I\'ve been watching this one (my freehand sucks) and I have to say I love your work. I like the faceas it is. It comes across well in the pictures, but I know things can look VERY different in \"real life\".

Well, I\'ve been working at the freehand on his girlie dresslol Its still a bit rough and I am working out the kinks but what do you think so far. The second picture is in true scale so you can get an idea of the actual size of the freehand. The design itself I got from a flyer that was inside \"The Return of the King\" DVD. It only had one gemstone in the picture but I desided to add three more small ones just for good measure. I\'m trying to get this guy done this weekend so if you have any suggestions I\'m all ears!

From what i can see the face was the only thing that needed any attention, cant see whats been done to that. The free hand is brilliant love the gems m8 you\'ve done a hell of a good job on em. I\'d go as far as saying they were almost flawless very well done :D
