WoW, 15 looks at a totally irrevential post, most excellent, I hope the exponential factor does not belie empirical reasoning of my thread.

Saddle up, and if your little horse thinks it weird, don't expect any empathy, life is relative..... what I want... really, really want, is justifiable criticism.

Be Hard, but be Real, consider all angles, all contexts, because I will. This is, for 1 year no longer a hobby, this is creativity in a very limited genre. I intend to promote the aspects of Art in a rather facile (implying compliant) world of repetition and fashion.

If you are offended, then you belong in this thread

Lets put this into perspective, 11500+ have looked at the Gokan thread, that means, to me, you are happy to gain and not even give thanks, you maybe think we are not worthy of your time, in that case go to another site, I can recommend a few...if not, don't be shy, help us that post as much as we help you. Saying its nice...crap...pick out what bothers you, you may not be justified but you will not, at least by me, be condemned.

As for this figure, I can see 1000+ faults yet no one comments....if you wanna suck eggs forever may I suggest something smaller than chicken............

after all this I think only Ben and Jike have said anything constructive....that's sad

Let's start with some basic criticism...

COLOUR Delacroix, romantic notions viewed by artists in the northern hemisphere as true, bollox,,,, Itten, dutch artist, makes it simple, here you can learn about contrast in a simplistic way, but do not go into the psychological..1, not needed, 2, not correct....remember THEORY has no conclusion

COLOUR is an expansive subject, but to get everyone on the same plane, I'm at 54degrees north, this is extremely important as to how I see the world.

So Light is more important than all else, where you paint, how you paint is objective to light. ie what I am saying is if you live in Norway you paint to a blue light, why try and paint a Spanish light...if you live in England paint English light etc

When I paint landscapes, they only work if they represent the nature of the landscape, I will spend months in an area to know the light, that's how it works

I can't speak for everyone else, but I have been fairly inactive in miniature painting since last summer, so I'm just looking for inspiration. The Gokan thread is helping me very much. But it is also chronicling the efforts of artists with far more skill than I have, so I just sit back and admire the work. And it has been a pleasure to watch.

Specifically on your piece, that's some fine sculpting, I really liked the addition of the boar head on the belt, all of your additions seem to suit the style and atmosphere of the mini.Except the plastic skulls, I'm just not a fan of them on this mini, the style of sculpting looks wrong to me, but I may be alone in that thinking. And I have been very curious to see how you handle the painting, since you had such detailed critiques in the other thread. It shows you have a very advanced understanding of many techniques.

I will continue to lurk, and hopefully I can begin painting and posting in my neglected WIP, it has been too long!

Dennis, it might be that my IQ / English is poor but Im struggling to understand some of your comments. eg the colour theory section - is this just a random rant of aimed at a certain artist(s).?

As for comments like 'it looks nice' , when I comment like that its more of an encouragement / keep up the good work type meaning and tbh I carnt see a problem with that
(I like knowing people are following my progress even if they carnt see anything to criticise).

Your Gokan is looking great, seeing my sculpting skills are well below par, I will save my crits (if any) to when you start painting him. That at least is something I know a little about.

I think exactly the same as Ten ball Dennis. I never critizise things I have no glue about. Sculpting is one of these things. I'm happy if I can fill up gaps smoothly when needed.

I'm not sure why you didn't post this into the Gokan thread?

Imho there is nothing you can't say there and sometimes a little spark is needed to start a constructive discussion (or to start a revolution, hehehe).

11k views on the Gokan thread? Never looked at that. Woah, that makes me scared, after all for me it rather feels like sitting on a "virtual" painting table with you guys. Now It's like that painting table is in the middle of a full Auditorium Maximum. :)
All I can say, is the same I always say to new students making practica in our laboratory. Feel free to ask/say anything on what I do. That's the best way for our students to learn as I'm more than happy to explain and go into detail for them. At the same time it's the only way I can learn too and reflect on things that I do automatically (and maybe wrong or more complicated than needed).

So for all watchers, feel free to comment you are very welcome to!!

P.s.: Hopefully that all makes sense, as I'm no English native speaker.

@Dennis: You are painting landscapes? Any possiblity to look at them? From time to time I paint acrylic paintings of more or less realistic/surrealistic topics. I'm always interested in other people's artwork.

Therese are always regarded as 2 seperate entities of miniature painting competition so from my standpoint I must keep them seperate... Example crystal brush is about miniature painting 13 categories. The 14 th category is best sculpt. As sculpting is cool I don't give a crap about learning it. It's not my thing art has many faces and most of the time more often then not a pottery maker is not a rennasance painter!!! Greek amphorae ancient art davinci rennasance art so subjective. it's in the hands of the philistines people give feedback and curtious crits based on what their expertise is.... So I can agree with ten ball yeah I'm taken back by the sculpting but what I know and a very high rank on P&P. to prove further my accolades and the last to time I attended a golden demon I've amassed 2 trophies and an hinurable mention cert!! So I only know about painting Dennis my buddy. I wouldn't know the first thing about sculpting it looks great yeah but I cannot go any further because simplety I don't know if the board head is the right dimension I mean I only know painting and I too know this well I full understand Betty Edwards book on color theory and pick my colors on the fly based on the methodology therein... So my friend when you start the painting I will be keeping a watchful eye on "hmmmmm" and give you a crit conversation that only the colonial politicians of old like Sam Adams will be envious of.

But now we have some interaction. it helps develop confidence (I think so anyway). Skels also commented on the skulls and I think, as they are kit bashed bits I will take them off, I'd personally prefer some sort of celtic pin but that would be beyond my ability, ideas would be appreciated.

Not at all 10, I've thrown in 2 references for colour theory, well worth a read and given a brief 'opinion' on them. It is something that we as painters are continually studying, be it conscious or not. My problem with encouragement is it becomes a bit quaint and then you wonder if it is meant! I do anyway.

Can't wait to start painting this guy, need to base him first.

Yes, students all... criticism can be tailored to level of ability, as with any profession. Here's an old and rather basic landscape from Tryvann, Oslo

Most excellent buddy. It may be not our primary need to sculpt but when we choose to paint surely we are evaluating the sculpt of the model as to whether or not it is of a certain level of proficiency.

Any criticism from yourself is most welcome and very much considered :)

You could just put round, flat or convex plates, and free hand a bit Celtic knotwork. That would be the direction I would take it. If free hand is not your strong point, perhaps you can get some cheap earrings from eBay, I found some Celtic design stud earrings that were around the size of small shields. I'd guess you could find some smaller ones. It's worth a shot!

I'm a painter not a sculptor and I am amazed by what people can sculpt but I tend to re frame from criticising on sculpting as I cannot advise how to improve it by any means. I often sit here with my jaw on the floor at peoples sculpting skills. Your sculpt looks awesome and its beyond anything I can do. I don't think i'd have the patients to learn how to do it properly beyond making simple additions to a model. Looking forward to seeing it painted though. A miniature comes to life when its got paint on it.

Stunning idea, 54mm is a great scale for these wee ideas, going to follow this up, Cheers

Yeah, I think in the product description in gives measurements, in inches. Even 1/4 inch may be too large, I'm not sure though. If nothing else it may give you some sculpting ideas. Good luck.

As for the criticism, why does it have to be that, it's feedback and ideas. Anyone is entitled to give them.
true story
Jack Nicklaus, greatest golfer ever on the practice ground at the British Open hitting balls. A 28 handicapper (a beginner painter) said, I've noticed you do this, pointing to what Jack saw as an error, he worked on it and won the tournament.
the point is, everyone sees something different and never be afraid to give your view, it is up to the receiver to take it on board.
as for the views, I would suggest a huge chunk of the 11k views will be us who are taking part, checking to see if anyone has said anything for us to work on.
To be honest, I do get a little frustrated when I post and ask a question to see I've had loads of views but no opinion. I have had to re ask to get a response at times. I do believe that as my skills hopefully improve then more will comment, that does seem to be the way of things.
I have total admiration for the likes of 10, Andy, Bailey, Sproket and many more, but my point, and this is NOT a rant, is their threads get loads of response, us lesser mortals don't do as well.
Feedback is the key and I suppose we all crave it.
