At least you are more trusted than atheists.

Now, about the America thing.
When are the rest of you lot going to learn to speak English (espcially you lot in the British Isles) and stop using that idiotic metric system?
Everything should be made of 12s and 3s.

\"No, I don\'t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.... I support the separation of church and state. I\'m just not very high on atheists.\"
- George H. W. Bush, 1987

I\'m always perplexed people who feel atheists to be untrustworthy and morally suspect. It seems like an indefensible characterization, considering that when we choose to be good people, it\'s never because we are afraid of divine judgment. At worst it\'s enlightened self-interest, and if everyone did that the world would actually be better than the unenlightened self-interest seems to be making it.

For those of you just joining us, I\'d like to summarize the salient points made so far.

Side A

- Everyone should be armed, ideally with pocket-sized thermonuclear devices

- The US singlehandedly won both WW I and WW II

- Everyone should believe exactly as I do

- Everyone who doesn\'t believe exactly as I do should be shot.

Side B

- All guns and sharp objects should be confiscated and banned

- Western Culture - and America in particular - are the root cause of everything

- The American Constitution sucks

- The US did nothing useful in either WW I or WW II. In fact, the Welsh pretty much had the thing sewed up before they got there.

- Everything the US did manage to do, they did only for $$$

- Everyone should believe exactly as I do

- Everyone who doesn\'t believe exactly as I do should be ridiculed

PS - I hope I didn\'t leave anyone out. If you feel slighted, please let me know and I will try to offend you as well. :D

It might be because almost every atheist I know has to constantly bring it up.
Yes, we understand, you don\'t believe in a god.

It seems more like a \"Hey, I\'m hip, I don\'t believe in god. I gotta tell everybody.\" to look daring and intellectual more than a philosophy.

Just for the record all those who push their religious beliefs irritate me, that\'s between you and your god (non-god), just don\'t expect the majority to change their ways for you.

I\'m not pushing my religious beliefs.
Donna mentioned that because of hers she felt alienated. I responded to that.

I admit it\'s been a bit on my mind lately, particularly because it\'s been a lot in the press lately. However, nothing I\'ve said or done could be considered pushing my beliefs.
(do you tell your Catholic friends to stop pushing their religion on you every year when they wear those ashes on their heads?)

Now, do you expect theists never to mention their belief?
I think it\'s kind of like heterosexuals who wish homosexuals to stay \"in the closet.\"
The response is to ask the heterosexuals to step \"in the closet\" and go a day without giving any indication of their sexual preference. Don\'t make bawdy jokes, don\'t make any mention of wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends, past or present, don\'t wear wedding rings....
It\'s just unrealistic.

Getting a bit testy there Vince, no one said your name at all, nor were you directly implied.

Yep, especially when a topic has nothing to do with religion. If a discussion of religion comes up fine. If not I don\'t care for it particularly.

I find you\'ll find most don\'t care one way or another if someone is gay, they merely don\'t think they\'re \"special\" and should get special treatment. Ok, you\'re gay, big deal, get over yourself and move on. In the office, however, it is not required nor appropriate for either heterosexual or homosexual.

As I\'ve said before, too many people in this world let things identify them. Race, Religion, Sexual Preference, these are not identities, these are a part of who you are.

Too many are the Atheist Bob, or the Homosexual Sam, instead of Bob, who also happens to be an atheist, or Sam, who also happens to be homosexual.

Funny, I find the complete opposite to be true. I\'ve never had an atheist come up and start talking about religion, but I\'ve had more than one person witness/yap at me about their church, etc.

Yeah, they suck too, and I\'ll usually tell them I don\'t care either, but working in science on a college campus I know more atheists than not, and it always comes across to me as a statement rather than a belief. (or rather a non-belief).
I don\'t feel the need to validate my relationship with my deity, or my existence by constantly shouting it out, it\'s a personal thing.
In fact, the only time I can ever remember bringing up my religion, was in defense of another religion.

You mean an open flame isn\'t the preferred method of witch disposal any more? Dang!

The last time my friends and I persecuted a witch the bonfire was the unanimous choice and firearms were never mentioned.

The heathen woman turned into a rat and escaped too. Perhaps we should have used a rifle instead. Something to consider for the future for sure.

You tend to attach crassness and simple brutishness with your comments.......the point is really simple Phil, learn some adult decorum and decency.

How about stop boring me with your bollocks? I hate the type of nonsense you peddle, from your personal issues to your utter nonsense gun fantasies.

Dosen\'t go over quite so well when you are called into question...............good nite Phil.

In what way is that Shawn? Have you really \'called me to question\'? Your outlook ranges from peace-loving Christian one minute to gung-ho gun-lover the next. Your mindset, given your predisposition to arming all folks, alarms sound-minded people. I don\'t know how you operate over there in the states, but I always thought you were a straight-talking bunch. Maybe I was wrong. You\'d rather hang on to the fact that I mentioned your condition/disabilty/depression and wave it round the place like a little trophy; see, he\'s got personal, he\'s taking the piss out of my disability! It doesn\'t wash with me Shawn, never will. Decorum is one thing, railing against your gun-loving is another.

I still think I was misrepresented by your take on the money issue. It was not the motivation at all. They did do well out of it though. There\'s a world of difference between what I wrote and what was interpreted.

And the other comment doesn\'t warrant anything other than a raised eyebrow.

That was pretty much the entire purpose of my post: to take everybody out of context and misinterpret their positions ;) An (apparently missed) attempt at lighting the mood. :(
