The state lottery this week has grown to ginormous proportion, and my coworkers decided they\'d rather be rich and started a little lotto club until the giant jackpot has been won. So I had to think... with a statistically insignificant chance of winning, should I drop $1 to be part of the little club?

After considering the idea of having to do all their work if they win it and leave, I decided to pitch in.

At my last job, the lotto club was vicious and unforgiving. If you didn\'t have your money to them every Wednesday by x time you were out and could never rejoin.

Is this just an American thing? A midwest thing? A working class thing?

Nah I\'m part of the Lotto group in work. I think it is that little voice in the back of your mind saying \"You\'ll still have to work ifthey win\" that makes most people join.

But I still spend my £4 a week on my own Lotto as well though.

The company I used to work at did it. I think the idea was that when you have 30 people putting in 2 dollars a week your chances of getting something are better than if you were just doing it on your own. And $2 a week for a smaller prize is a less troublesome expense than say $60 a week for the whole thing.

Theres one at my work too, but they also have shares in premium bonds, so to get in you have to wait for someone to leave and then buy out their stake!

Its something silly like £100 for the bonds and then £2 a week lottery!

Me and the wife only have one line a week, but I believe, if youre gonna win it then youre gonna win it so only need the one!

I wouldn\'t be surprised if this was just to strongly encourage payment - people have filed lawsuits for \"their\" share of the money when they didn\'t pay up one week and their lotto pool suddenly won big. (I\'d have a waiver drawn up, myself - you miss a week, you have no claim on any winnings, but only for that one week)

We used to have a syndicate at my work with a full contract and constitution (god bless local Govt employees). After two years we\'d won a massive £10 each (minus our £104 investments at £1 per week) so we decided not to bother anymore. One of the big problems was everyone chose birthdays for their numbers so there were too many similar choices not spreading our chances out enough.

We have a different style one at work, we have a bonus ball cash in. Theres 49 numbers and everyone pays 50p a week for thier number. Whoever has the number which is the bonus ball on Saturdays lotto wins £25.

So who\'s the unlucky sod who has to pay 50p for ball number 50 to make the maths work? lol

Exeactly what we did, only being high rollers each ball was £1. But the person who won the thing each week and to tromp round and collect the money in their Lunch hour on Tuesdays. lol

Of course when I won it there was a triple rollover (we typically only get around 40 of the numbers bought each week) so for my £37 quid I had to get it done three weeks running. ;)
