Price is also a consideration... how much are yoiu willing to spend?

I\'ve taken excellent macro pics (minis, and some bugs) with the Canon Powershot series. But they are not particularly inexpensive.

hello the best camera review site is DPREVIEW.COM

I bought a new Kodak DX7590 after reading the revies on this site.

Depending on what you want to spend, its important to get a camera with a macro function (allows you to take close up pictures) and a good optical zoom. The higher the number the better.

My new kodax has a 10X optical zoom with is quite high. Some cameas also have whats called a digital zoom, this isnt as important of a feature as it tends to pixilate your images as it tries to zoom in closer.

Mega pixs which is also a number thats listed in the stats has to do with how many million pixils or dots per square inch is in the pictures. This really has onlyto do when printing images to paper or for a publication, not as important for the web.

I know very little about digicams. So I asked a question like this in another forum and after advice settled for a Nikon Coolpix 3200.

If you look in my gallery ALL the pics were taken with this camera. The last few when I figured out how to set max resolution, and the latest one with my \"new\" lighting setup with daylight lamps.

The camera was reasonably priced and I found it easy to use.

I have just started to take pictures of minis, but this is what works for me.

If you are willing to fork out alot of money, a Nikon D70 with a macro lense or a few extension rings should be able to to pick out the indifidual paint pigments. I\'ve got one extension ring on a regular lense, and a need to stand a ways back to fit the mini in one shoot. Another problem is that the depth of feild is so low that part of the mini is in focus, but the rest isn\'t ( great for close ups I guesse:rolleyes: ) Still, I have a picture with this thing where you can see a bees indifidual hairs:cool:

I´m not thinking about the money for the moment, maybe a maximum of 500€-600$. I have seen some catalogues and Canon Power shot series looks nice, other marks? I don´t know kodak series but I will look for it.My old camera is a Panasonic. It takes good photos but I want a new one, I have heard that Nikon are good isn´t it?

Thanks t all!!

If 600$ is your limit, Nikon 70 is not for you.

Camera $1200 ( probably alot cheaper now:( )
Extenxion rings $150
Macro lense Any where from $300 to $3000

I have a nikon coolpix 5400 and have been VERY happy with the results. In fact the macro lense manages to pick out details I can\'t even see sometimes even knowing they\'re there after seeing the photos, which has forced me I think to improve my painting, haha, to get rid of those unwanted details. for miniature photography I really haven\'t wanted anything more.

But this camera is very nice both in terms of miniature photography and everyday photography, it is compact, but not too compact, you can add addaptor lenses to it, so you can add telephoto, wide angle, or even a real macro lense if you want (although not really needed).

The bottom line is that I have been thinking about getting a much more expensive Digital SLR, but when I do, I fully intend to keep this Nikon for my miniature photography, since I\'m 100% happy with the results.

This model should be easily in your price range as well

Nikon 5400 looks very nice, I have seen a lot of Nikon cameras in some webs and I think that I need some like this. The prices in America are more cheap that here in Spain! anyway I will try to find the best offer

Thanks:D

Nadgers to Nikon D-SLRs.

They are over priced and under perform compared to the opposition.

If you want a DSLR, go for a Canon 350D and a 50mm compact macro. The body should cost you £500 and the lens around £200. Bloody marvel for the price it is!

If that\'s too expensive, I would seriously recommend the new Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ30. Superb image stabilised 35-450mm LEICA lens. It\'s simply awesome. Great macro mode, 8mp res. and built like a tank!

Most people would never need a DSLR if they bought one of these beauties.

It\'s not that cheap at around £380, but I reckon you\'re best off buying something that\'ll last you until it breaks in ten years time and will need no upgrading.

I use a cheap-ass Minolta Dimage X20 (50€) without macro mode and I think my pictures are OK (check my galleries to prove me wrong :D). I have some problems with lighting though.

I\'ve just been watching the Gadget Show on Channel 5 (UK). They did a feature on cheap digital cameras (not camcorders like it said on the guide and the Channel 5 website!). Whilst talking about general use they did pick up on the macro on the cheap as chips Olympus FE100 (or FE110). The Olympus website describes it as a Super Macro mode and claims that you can get in as close as 2cms. Anybody on here ever used one? What do you think? It only costs about £100 and on the grounds that I\'ve already got a decent digital camera for general use, plus two film SLRs, camcorder, etc, etc I\'m thinking that I might just buy one exclusively for mini photos.

This canon is too expensive for me. And this Panasonic is the first in that I though because my old one is Panasonic. I´m thinking for the moment in two posibilities: The Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ20 (with the same macro that the FZ30 but more cheaper:)) or the CANON PowerShot S2 IS, maybe a Nikon, what do you think?

Like Spacemunkie said above, I\'d skip the Nikons. Great cameras, but you pay a good chunk extra for the name. I recently bought a really nice Pentax D-SLR with two lenses and a case for less than the Nikon point and shoot I\'d been looking at.

I take it you\'re an easily offended Nikon man then! lol

I own a 300D, my old man owns a 350D, a 10D and a 20D. My mate has a D70. I\'ve used \'em all and compared them (along with a great many other cameras. The beauty of being a member of a photographic club....:D)

The Nikon produces inferior pics. they just aren\'t quite as sharp. Very good, but not as good. The body is more expensive and almost every equivalent lens is more expensive and in some cases considerably more expensive. Even the 300D takes sharper pics than the D70, and it is ancient in digicam terms!

Plenty of mags have run comparisons and came to the same conclusions: if picture quality is the be all, then the Canon gear is the stuff to go for.

I can get you some 350D pics if you REALLY want me to post them here :D

@Nano: The FZ20 is shit hot as well. My old man has one of those too ;)

@Dauber: You get an istD? I always liked Pentax cameras ever since my dad gave me an old K1000. Bulletproof it was and took some ace pics! 645 was a beauty too!

Nah! not a nikon man. Just seen some great slagging matches over on some photo forums. A Nikon troll gets on a canon forum and vice-versa. Hell breaks out.

I got myself a 20D some months back! So another Canon man :D. spent ages umming and ahring over a D70 or 300D. Then the 350D came out. Then the tax man giveth a rebate  so it was a 20D! (20D far more solid a camera). I used to have a Canon T70 in my 35mm days.

Stonking camera. Just taken some pics of Adrian Bay\'s Golden Demon entries for the next Ravage special. Still need a better lens though.

Had fun in a recent storm:

Canon looks good for all then, the problem is that I don´t have enough money to buy some like a 20D o 300D and also the lens, so I think I will try to get the best camera without exchageable lenses. maybe the panasonic FZ20 is a good option and have a Leica lense that is very good, or maybe the canon powershot

Thanks to all for your advices;)
