Looking for a new camera

Seriously though, this was my problem. I\'m not into photography so I only wanted a camera for my mini photography. So, you come along to a forum and ask and end up more confused
What I did was look at a couple that had been suggested and read as many reviews as I could find on the web.
And one of the best bits of advice I was given is: \"the best camera in the world will NOT make you a better painter.\"

I wasn\'t interested in getting anything too flash - just something which excelled in miniature photography. I ended up buying a 5400 from the US and had a friend help in getting it to me. Thus far I\'ve been really impressed and I saved a fortune on what I would have paid here in Australia. For the USD250 I forked out I couldn\'t be happier...

If the camera is for principally photographing minis, and displaying them on the web, you don\'t need high resolution. You will reduce the size to fit on the screen.
Most digicams will have a decent macro facility. Read the reviews.
Zoom; only pay attention to optical zoom. some go up to 10x. probably not necessary.
A camera with some reasonable manual control over aperture and shutter speed will be useful. If you get a camera that has this, all the better......it wont be long before you want to try new things.
Battery life; some will eat up batteries like you wouldn\'t believe. If the camera can run from the mains that may well prove useful.
Use some of your budget to get a tripod.
I wont try to recommend a camera cos there\'s so many of them. Work out your budget, requirements and narrow it down that way. I\'m sure if you narrow it down and then ask, someone here will have one and comment. Then check their pictures!
And totally; a good camera wont make you a better painter. But, Nano, that\'s not an issue for you!!! We just want to see more of you\'re work!

Arjay, I\'ve continually heard great things about the 5400. The editor and photographer of Tamiya Model Magazine used to use one for publication photos, although he has progressed to a D70 DSLR now.
And never heard of Cannon. Are they a copy of Canon?

I didn´t know nothing about cameras but I know some important details now. I will buy a camera with a optical zoom 10x, a good macro and I know also the good marks. I´m not a profesional photogapher, I only want a good camera for the next years for doing good photos of minis and normal general photos. And of course, the the camera don´t paint my minis, I do it!
I will post new work next month...my best work I think

One of the good things about the site I mention above is that you can compare the features of two cameras you might be interested in side by side here.
You can also do direct comparisons of the photographs they can take here, although sometimes you do have to look at the individual camera\'s pages to see all the features, like Super Macro mode on the Konica Minolta Z3 (which costs about half as much as a Canon 350D).

@Orb: Yep, it\'ll end up more like an 80mm. But the quality of the macro is awesome. Makes you realise how shit your paintwork is!!

I will have access to this camera, and am looking to choose one that can best meet the needs for taking pictures of scenes, dog sports, camps, wildlife, and of course miniatures.

If the cameras are in an online shop, they should have a features list. For example like this one in Futureshop:

If you see the focus range 0.5m-infinity...no mention of macro mode, macro range, etc. So no good for miniatures.
In other stores, look for macro mode, focus range, focal length, macro range, that sort of thing. Different places list the features differently so you just need to go through them.

As to the Canon - Nikon \'debate\'. I\'ve been Nikon user for 30 years without complaint.
And I did get to see Orb\'s Canon DSLR at Gamesday last year and it is a impressive piece of machinery, but in the end it\'s what you are comfortable using.
When I was looking for a 35mm SLR I tried both Canon\'s and Nikon\'s and couldn\'t get away with the feel or handling of the Canon, but the Nikon fitted to my hand like a glove, hence the fact I stuck with them and never been dissapointed.
We could go on about Barrel distortion, Astigmatisym in lenses and all the other technological aspects but in the end it\'s the picture that counts for the person using it.
@ Nano; See if you can explain what you want to a camera shop and see if they will let you do some test photo\'s.

But this is very important for me, I\'m buying a camera this week and I still don\'t know what to do.
As I mentioned, I got a reference to Canon 350D, does anyone here have pictures taken with it?
Also I checked Nikon coolpix and Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ30...No one sells em anymore. Stopped being produced.
And these two cameras made a difference for me since very good painters shot very good pics with them.
the internet has tons of cameras with macro focuses to offer, but here are people with proof of their well images.
And that\'s what I\'m looking for.
