After reading Sebs tutorial on painting true metalics, it kind of inspired me to try it myself. I started painting it just before Christmas and then took him on vacation with me to San Felipe where in between fishing and shooting off fireworks, I did some more! I kinda lost track of time but I think it took me around 20 or 30 hours. Anyways, I\'m always open for suggestions...what worked, what didn\'t. Thanks for looken...and voten :D

Wow! really great job.

I\'d love it if you\'d share the colors you used to achieve the look of the gold armor. I too benefitted from Seb\'s article and have put some work into some silvers since then with great results but haven\'t been gutsy enough to try something like this yet. Please share your bases and glazes.

Best job I\'ve seen on this model. Voted and commented. :)

Here are the colors I did for the gold:

The keys to remember with doing this type of gold is that the metalics will remain shiney while the shadow colors (which are non metalic colors) will remain non shiney, thus creating the contrast between light and dark. Do not add any additives (just water) DO NOT DULL COAT AS IT WILL DESTROY WHAT YOU PAINTED!!!!

Gold:

Base coat: This was applied with about 5 thinned down coats.
GW Shinning Gold

Shadows:
GW Bestial Brown - This color is applied to the largest part of the metal. I generally tend to apply it to the area I am shading and then feather it in to be smooth
GW Dark Flesh - The following colors are all applied and then pushed with a clean brush (you can suck off all remaining paint for this or simply clean your brush (since there is really no paint on your brush, this can be done quickley before the paint can dry)
GW Scorched Brown
Just the tiniest bit of these two colors
P3 Exile Blue - The blue gives the shadow a since of depth you can\'t get with any other color. I just mixed it in with my scorched brown/black mix) If you do too much it just looks blue and is wrong!!!
Black

Highlight:
RMS (reaper master series) New Gold
VMC (vallejo model color) Silver (don\'t go all the way to silver if you can)

The GW shinning gold is my median color so that is what I am using to clean up my blends. I thin it down a whole bunch. It is really just gold flake in water. You may need to apply this thin wash to the entire area to avoid paint lines. Try not to get it in the shadow areas as the metal flake with reflect light and ruin the effect.

Hey A,

Those metals look really great!

I disagree about dullcoat however. I think it can help out with this technique (my opinion of course.) By using dullcoat it knocks a bit (not all) of the shine off the highlight areas making them blend with the shadows while reducing the improper scale issues of the metallic flake, this makes small metallic details more visible. If you are still missing the shine it\'s possible to paint on only the highest highlights after the dullcoat. This gives you the punchy shine and smooth transitions between metal and shadow. You should give it a shot some time.

Well done!

Excellent allround. Love the front of the plate. The loincloth is well painted as well. Maybe you could have used the silver armour colour for the helmet as well as I think it get\'s lost slightly as a focalpoint because of the brillant gold on the torso. Maybe just adding different coloured details to it would help. Minor point though.

@Quent: Good point! :)

Great info. Thanks!

I had guessed the bestial and scorched browns but I would have missed the dark flesh and blues that you used. I also would have had the base at burnished gold rather than shining.

I\'ll put the information to work and see what comes out. May even try a purple in place of the blue you used to see if it gives a similar effect.

BTW, can you give an approximate equivalent to your blue in either GW or VMC colors?

Very inspiring work. Thanks for sharing.

I\'d say GW reagal blue with a touch of red and black in it to darken it a bit. Remember, your adding this to your brown mix not applying it directly to the model as a straight blue.
