Mecenary Ogre

Hi all just finished this piece, turned out to be more of a pain(t)job than expected, this ogre is bombarded with a million billion details (or so it seemed).

the base is an easy one (it\'s a playing piece ;) )

would be great to hear what\'a think about it!

skelettetes.

not sure if i spelled that right. but anyhow. i love the model itself, but the elephant skin is just not blended enough. where as the rest is done so nicely, i feel you need to work on the skin of the elephant some more. the tusks are brilliant and all the other attention to tiny details is great too. keep it up.

yep, \"skelettet\" is swedish for skeleton ;)

thanks for feedback! actually, i think the photos killed the elephant a bit lol. i think it became one of the better details on the mini, IRL at least.

thanks!

Elefant skin is quite wrinkled, in real life, so I think it\'s appropriate to not have it super-smooth. It needs some notion of texture.

I think it\'s well painted and you\'ve pulled off a number of good techniques here. The problem I can see with this piece is that the eye is drawn first to the two shiny shields, then to the elefant head, and then you find yourself looking for the actual head. I know this is a problem with the sculpt itself, but I feel you have made it more of a problem by the way you have painted the face and the shields. The face looks muted and understated, whereas the shields are Shiny with a capital S. I would like to see the face being more of a focal point.

But, besides that I think it\'s great! :)

yeah you\'re correct, most ppl dont even see it\'s actually an ogre (and NOT an elephant ogre!) and yes, the shield(s) draws the attention, maybe not the best execution but hell i wanted to tryout some other techniques than what i usually paint :D

Edit: one closup photo on the actual ogreface is included in the gallery. just so you ppl can find it hahaha

Really digging this mini. I sense that there\'s more to the elephant than shown in the pics. I think in some areas a bit of darklining would be a help, but other wise, bravo!

the shields are ace, but as said before on first look I missed the face, overall though I like the painting but not the mini.

I got this mini, and I was puzzled by it. I couldn\'t figure out if Rackham Ogres were elephants, until I found the head. It is a BIZARRE sculpt.

But I really like your paint on it. That silver shield is amazing. A few nitpicks have been pointed out, but I am off to easily vote it a nine. Your eye does get drawn into the details first, like the shields, but they\'re veyr, very well done. Way to go!

I\'m seeing lots of talented Swedes around here. Are there any Swedish manufacturer\'s at all? Just curious.

Not that I know of... There used to be a Swedish company for historical minis, called Pagan Art. But it is no longer active.

Shame about that. Maybe I\'m off base but I get sort of the same feeling about Swedish painting that kind fo went on with Spain a while back. Then all these high quality Spanish companies started up.

But I\'ve hardly been keeping a part of the eCommunity for that long. Again, nice work SkelletetS. If you applied the skill shown in this fig on something waaaaayyy less goofy looking (sculpt wise) I think you\'d be really making a big noise, score wise. Great stuff, it\'s just that there\'s too much wierdness going on with this fig.

What I think is always a great compliment is that your painted version makes me want to paint my fig, \'cause you made this mini look fun and challenging.

Neat mini!

I really enjoy this sculpt, one of my favs! The shields are stunning! I like this guy alot!

The mini looks a bit glossy, perhaps thats why some parts look a bit odd... What kind of varnish do you use? I know its for games, but still using some good matte varnish should cancel the glossyness out and still be able to withstand some gaming without chipping.

thanks :) the mini is coated with vallejo matte varnish - it still gives the surface some kind of glossyness. still, its the best varnish ive stumbled upon so far, but im open for ideas on that one...

They sell it at Wentzels Hobby here in Stockholm. Don\'t know if you can find it anywhere in Gothenburg. Try \"real\" hobby stores. The first time I managed to find one was in a shop for RC vehicles. They didn\'t stock it, but they could order it in from one of their suppliers.

Note, that the one that is currently available is a new formula, as the older didn\'t meet EU regulations. I haven\'t tried the new formula, so I don\'t know for sure it\'s as good as the old one, but I\'ve heard that it should be more or less the same finish.

i didnt even found it at ebay, which probably means its more or less impossible to find lol ... is it spray? i prefer vanish-in-a-bottle. dont wanna risk ruin a months paintjobb of blood and tears by failing with sprayvarnish.
