Mini painters genes

So, you\'re probably wondering why the hell I\'m talking about genes.
Well I was just wondering, I have been painting for a year and a half and I have noticed a few things about mini painters :
1. They\'re usually complitly hooked about their hobby to a point where you can\'t go in any room of their house without seeing something related to minis
2. They relate everything they see to minis ( \"Hey, look at those cool spice, they could make a great base\", or \" Maybe I could use that toilet cleaner to strip my minis\")
3. Most of them are also addicted to computer games and more specifically RPG\'s
4. Most of them are also manga fans to some extente

I duno if those points applie to all minis gamers but I was just wondering. Maybe we all have the same genes and all reacte the same ...Spooky... lol

I guess that with our obviously addictive personality types, that it\'s a good thing that drug use isn\'t one of the defining attributes. Maybe we substitute mini painting? Ahhh for the smell of Future floor wax in the morning.

um, I\'m only half a painter

You would probably find different mini stuff in half the rooms of my house. My daughter\'s room and the bathroom being free of them... usually.

I do see things all the time that either remind me of a mini I painted or give me an idea for a new one.

I do love RPGs but I rarely play them. I wouldn\'t say I\'m addicted. By the way, no one has made a game as good as Ultima VII, not even Ultima Online compares.

I have no idea who manga is. Am I a bad person?

I\'m not hooked to paintin, but I\'m addicted to gaming with my GW or rackham games, I\'m only half a painter so I\'ll never reach some of the high standards seen on CMON. I usually quit on a mini when I\'ve attained a \"5\"

Well, since I have no clue what MANGA is, I will stick with the three points I know! I am compulsive about seeing little artsie fartsie things in shops and deciding I could do a much better job on them... I also marvel at color and the way light reacts with objects a heck of a lot more since I have really been into my painting. It is a great inspiration when almost anything around makes you think of painting!

Well, I agree with 1 for sure.

2. minis do occupy my thoughts, especially when I am about to throw something in the trash....

3. I like computer games, but not so much the rpgs....I like ghost recon- warcraft type action games. Is Dungeon Siege an RPG? That was kinda fun.

4. Umm not so much. I have never quite \'gotten\' manga or anything anime in general. I\'d prefer my animation/cartoons in the Simpsons or Looney Toons vein.

But, I think you are on to something

Maybe there is a page devoted to \'mini-lovers\' in the Human Genome project.....

Yep. I\'m hooked on PC games, and most of the time, I find myself evaluating stuff for it\'s possible application to my hobby.

I\'d say, the most common trait among mini painters is a certain taste for alternate realities.

Yep, gotta say all of those fit me. Especially the spices, since I wrote the article..
However, there are still some rooms devoid of miniature paraphanalia.. my parent\'s room, for one.

However, don\'t know if some genes are linked like those above. I know some of the top artists here and they\'ve confessed they can\'t draw.... yet they can freehand on a shield... strange.

only #2 really applies to me . . .
But not how things can be used for minis per se but how colors, reflections appear in nature and how that can be applied with paint.

I don\'t care for Manga particulalry - I prefer western comics a la Garth Ennis et al. I do like some Anime and pervertedly have a small collection of classic Hentai . . . naughty stuff that . . . and most decidely not for children. And arguably not for adults either! lol

I dont have mini stuff all over the house cos I have to share the house with 4 other ppl who have equally obsessive competing hobbies.....

I do think that some artistic genes can be passed down.....

but really.. with regards to the guys who can paint on shields but cant draw..... here\'s some food for thot

no matter how gifted a guy can be in er.... painting minis, I do think that some kinda training / teaching, even self taught, might be needed to actually draw on paper......

in fact, all the trainin might end up doing is unlocking the potential that already exists but is not used simply because the individual does not believe he or she can do it .

I am not sure if this is true for art artists, but it certainly is true for classically trained singers..... having a strong belief in your ability to sound good is as important has having right technique....call it freeing the mind to see what heights you can truly achieve.....

1 and 2 apply to me.

I\'ve got display cases throughout the house with minis in them, plus I\'ve usually got pieces in various stages sitting under lamps, on window sills trying to judge light sources for highlights.

My wife is always complaining how I\'ll look through jewelry catalogs or look at various items (car bumpers, bilboards, grocery store items ie spices) and voice an opinion on what colors would produce the same affect, etc.

# 3 applies the most to me. I have an unhealthy obsession with japanese arms and armour. That excludes the large piles of manga and loads of gundam crap I have lying around and the 200 or so anime DVD\'s I have.

I relate a lot of things with minis and I\'m also an RPG fan (playing Divine Divinity for the moment).

But I think one important point has been omitted from this poll: fantasy literature. I think a lot of fantasy fans read. I read a lot, for the moment I\'m reading book 5 of Wheel Of Time by Robert Jordan.

Yeah, I am completely hooked on mini painting, but I don\'t really notice things that are linked with minis in quite such an obsessive way. In fact there are many times when I can see something on numerous occasions before I suddenly realise I could use it on a mini (recently heard of one guy who got the perfect flesh tone by mixing curry powder with his paint!). I normally have to actually look for something I could use rather than just \'see\' it.

Computer games are OK, especially strategy games, but they take so much time up and I can get bored with them if they keep beating me. Not really into RPG\'s (computer based or the usual \'group of blokes in a dark room variety\'). I prefer the tactical nature of wargames more (not that I get to play these days!).

Manga. I\'ve had a brief flirtation with it in the past. Not that bothered about it now to be honest. I can take it or leave it.

All in all, I guess I don\'t quite fit your mini painter profile.



Oh, and I don\'t read fantasy literature either! Kind of grew out of it. In fact I don\'t really read fiction at all these days!

1 out of 4, is that bad?

I like mini painting and want to get better at it but I\'m a long way short of points 1 and 2. As for computer games, they can be fun but i rarely have time for them. I don\'t mind some manga, i have an interest in many types of art, particularly cartoon art. So I guess I\'m 1 out of 4.

As a professionally trained artist i must agree with Tabithatan. I\'ve seen many people with little or no obvious artistic ability, or training, create wonderful things once they unlock their potential. The most important thing being brave enough to not worry about mistakes.

I\'ve found the discipline of painting minatures to be very different to working on a drawing or a painting. It\'s hard to get very creative unless you can master the physical skills of working in that scale.

A reply and a confession

The reply: although 3 and 4 don\'t apply to me, 1 and 2 both do, to a degree. So I guess I\'m like, 2 halves, so I voted for 1

The confession: I guess this kind of relates to #2. When having conversations with people (e.g. my wife, in a business meeting, etc.), I frequently find myself tuning out whatever they\'re saying and intently studying the way shadows and highlights fall on their faces and pondering how I can use that to improve my painting. Fortunately, no one seems to have noticed yet. :innocent:

Has anybody else found themselves doing this on a regular basis?

Not on a regular basis, but once I started looking closely at people\'s faces I was surprised at how dark the lines of shadow and the borders of eyes really are.
