hmm...

I would say until CMON I thought the works at a teacher\'s home (who DM\'s us in a long running school D&D club now, even after we\'ve left High school) were great.

Then i saw stuff at a GW store and thought they were great.

But when I found this site... and saw works like Magmatrax, Nano\'s dreadnought, victoria lamb\'s awesome work, allan C, jeremie, too many too name.

I think 3 of my fav pieces though are still Victoria\'s lighted works and her orc squad, Magmatrax, Nano\'s dread, Jeremie\'s indian inspired elephant, Allan C\'s nurgle dread, and Victor Hardy\'s slayer sword winniner space marine (the one that was modified by Brother Sinnear). Oh and Temperance\'s gelatinous cube just RULES!

My main influences were both Kim Syberg\'s and Anthony Warrington\'s Space Wolves. I just loved their super smooth, clean and cartoony styles. For a long time I only painted Marines, and mainly Wolves. I showed my girlfriend pictures of their work recently and she stated that my work looks like theirs, which made me very happy.

Kim\'s work can be found in the SW codex, the awesome Wolf Lord and the Dreadnought are his. White Dwarf 185 also did a feature on his army.

Some of Anthony Warrington\'s can be found here. White Dwarf did a feature on him in 245.

I\'d like to get ahold of Kim, he is probably the only artist I would ever buy or commission a piece from. If anyone has any info or knows him I\'d appreciate the help.

Neil Thomason was always my favourite SW painter. SOme of Kim\'s stuff is on cmon (some guy bought a few of them)

Hm...I have no special Mini which influenced my paintings...it\'s mor about painters. Cheeba is one of my favorite painters and it was one of his minis that brought me back to painting.

I have to go with either the Space Wolf marines by Kim Syberg that JakeSH mentioned previously in this post;

or the Dwarf army that Paul Robins won the 1992 Slayer Sword with. It\'s featured in White Dwarf 151.

I look back on them now and although I see stuff posted regularly on CMON that is dramatically better, for their time, both artists made my jaw drop. As JakeSH mentioned, both had a cartoon type style that I find myself nostalgic for.

Kim\'s Wolf Guard Ranulf conversion would easily receive a 10 from me to this day, and I didn\'t believe that someone could paint whole regiments to the standard that Paul did until I saw that Dwarf army.

Excellent stuff!

Victoria\'s Firey Angel......Breathtaking. One of those are pieces where EVERYTHING comes together seamlessly - composition, fig\'s, pose, colors, subject. Alot of great fig\'s will have one or two of those done well. Her\'s had em\' ALL.

They\'ve already been mentioned, but I\'ll also have to go with Vince Hudon\'s Magmatrax and Victoria Lamb\'s Fiery Angel. Both are simply jaw-dropping.

I have no idea if it\'s on Cmon anywhere, but an old diorama by Mike Mcvey of a chaplain on the [at the time] new Space marine bike and an Exodite... for me that was a perfect moment in terms of realising what could be achieved with some great minis, skill and imagination.

I don\'t know. I guess I\'ve always come at things from a slightly different angle - askew, as it were. I found this site and all its mindblowingly beautiful minis to be less than inspirational - how could I ever hope to be able to paint like that ???
Then I found a mini that truly gave me hope!!! Hell! Even I could do that!!!
Vincegamer\'s immortal Left Talon of Rok
Sadly, a perusal of his gallery shows it to no longer be there. :(

Yes! I remember that vividly. I also saw it in White Dwarf.

Been said before but he\'s a heavy influence on me ;)
His wolves gave me a goal to aim for...It\'s a long way to the goal...

This is quite a depressing thread. From a whole world of brilliantly painted miniatures, a lot of people are citing the same pieces, I can\'t honestly believe that so many people got their inspiration from the same small pool of artists. Kim Syberg alone has three votes! I only remember one WD with his stuff in it, maybe two at the most.

Why is it depressing that some people are citing the same work?

The question wasn\'t what you think to be the greatest mininature ever painted; it was what was the most inspirational.

I don\'t hear people saying that they are depressed that with all the great music out there today, most artists still give credit to a small handfull as being the most inspirational( I\'m thinking Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc.)

If you haven\'t seen the miniatures that we\'re talking about, you probably still wouldn\'t think they were that great if you were to look at them.

But they were the Alexi Valtens of their time. I can remember when a miniature that wouldn\'t score above a 7.5 on this website would have walked away with a Golden Demon and an 8 would have brought home the Slayer Sword. If you don\'t like White Dwarf, thats cool, but that doesn\'t mean some talented painters didn\'t show off their work there.

Jakob Neilsen was probably the first painter that made me go \"Wow, I wanna be able to do that some day!\" Matt Verzani, Goatman, Phillipe, and JohnnyKS were some of the first big inspirations I got once I found CoolMini. Alexi Z, Steve Buddle, and QaioZhong are more recent inspirations.

Currently I\'m looking through some of Alexi\'s and Goatman\'s old models trying to decide exactly how to do the NMM on a Dwarf figure I\'ve wanted to paint forever :D

Because it shows a lack of thought. Someone says \"Magmatrax and Fiery Angel\" then someone else says.......\"Magmatrax and Fiery Angel\". Somebody else says \"KimSyberg\", then someone else says.......etc etc

The question wasn\'t what you think to be the greatest mininature ever painted; it was what was the most inspirational.

Yeah I read the question ;)

Firstly I think that statement is incorrect, if you pick up a copy of NME and read the feature interview (in which they uniformly ask about the artists inspirations) I doubt that ~half will say Elvis, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Secondly this thread isn\'t about music but if it was, and I said that the greatest band is Radiohead, and someone else said The Killers, and someone else said Morrissey, and then almost everyone else said either Radiohead or The Killers or Morrissey, I would be worried.

But they were the Alexi Valtens of their time. I can remember when a miniature that wouldn\'t score above a 7.5 on this website would have walked away with a Golden Demon and an 8 would have brought home the Slayer Sword. I happen to think that WD good (for boiling pots or propping up wonky tables), but I don\'t know how you could know that, or otherwise, from my last post. I\'m not disrespecting any of those famous pieces that people have mentioned, I just think that they haven\'t put any thought into their responses. I tried to think about what inspired me to start painting but it seems like some people (and I may be wrong) either copied and pasted an earlier reply, or took a brief glance at the top 50 and listed a few well known minis.

Either that or half of everyone on this thread was inspired by Magmatrax, Fiery Angel, Kim Syberg, Spacemunkie, Temperance, and one or two others, which I find unlikely. If it\'s true then this little bunch have a lot to answer for

I don\'t have a personally favorite mini painter, or painted mini for that matter. I look at everything and if i like the scheme or execution il stick it in my favorites for a while.
My biggest insriation has to be Paul Hart, my tutor at college. He has taught me so much about \'creative thinking outside the box\'.

sorry to upset you damekkos but I am going to say recently it Is Magmatrax by v hudon that could be classed as the most influential for me..purely due to the fact that when I first saw that model I went wow...and after searching for it for a while I found this site and the amazing amount of talent and tutorials on display really reignited my bug to relearn ..retry and push further my skills. Also got me trying out new ranges new models etc..

as for models it was probably the 5the edition warhammer characters that got me going after a long while of nothing special along came the likes of Tyrion,,Valten,,Belakor each model that came along got me more wanting to paint display instead of tabletop at a time when I was falling out with it all a bit.

as for influential painters for me in the last 20years or so of my hobby a few names stand out..

Fred Reed........(think he\'s on ebay as fredmasterpainter..Not sure on here)

Mike McVey somebody who\'s work eeven from the 80\'s/90\'s still is truly mindnumbing.

Matt Parkes especially the inquisitor he has in the Rulebook.

Jakob Nielsen ..Chris Blair and Joe Hill. and Victor Hardy..

All these probably make my list as they are artists who have always been willing to pass on there techniques and teach people how to do what they do so well.

each at times has given me something to really aspire to and keep me going..

now it changes every time I come to this site so thanks CMon and all who sail in her.
