Cregantur: Absolutely right mate. That graininess... I really don\'t like it. I think he looks ok from about a foot away, though the front of the chainmail was a real pain. Someone did mention that he should be stripped and re-done in the beginning, but again, I only need him to look good from a distance. If he was a champion, I likely would have stripped him though.

For now I think I am going to leave the woodgrain as is. Once I finish the rest of the unit I will take a look at them together to see if another highlight in some areas may be worth it.
