THE CURRENT ARMY:

And, to start us off, I will begin a bit of background for this army. As I complete the units they will get there own piece of history right here.

THE BACKGROUND:

PIETER VON CARSTEIN:
In an instance, his mind was awake. Darkness all around him, but he could feel the presence of new and old dead all around him. Trying to move his body, he found that none of his muscles would respond. How long had it been? Without even trying, he could feel his presence waking the newly dead around him, and with a simple thought they were off to find sustenance to help bring his decrepit body back to vitality. In the meantime he began channeling his thoughts to the older bones in and around the crypt, stationing skeletal soldiers around him to ensure no one bothered him while he replenished. But in the back of his head, so faint that he could barely make it out, the same phrase kept repeating... "he is coming!"

THE SHAMBLING HORDE:
These recently deceased members of Stirland's countryside shamble to do Pieter's bidding. Comprising of farmers and outlying soldiers, Pieter has successfully raised them as guardians to his tomb while he regains his strength.

THE RISEN SPEARS:
Risen from the long dead graves around the tomb encasing Pieter, this silent horde awaits is masters bidding in quiet sentry.

THE CRYPT BATS:
Once nobles of minor houses of the empire, the Crypt Bats proved to be the most loyal followers of Pieter Von Carstein. During the time that the Von Carsteins began to turn against one another, these three came upon the final assault on Pieter by the Witch Hunter Van Hal and the ultimate betrayal by Jarek Von Carstein. When all was done, they recovered what remained of their master and hid him away in the crypt they now reside. Over the years, cowering in the crypt for fear of being discovered, they slowly began to succumb to the more bestial side of their vampirism, feeding less and less on the scarce population around the crypt and more and more on the rats and bats that infested their home. After many years, with memories of their former selves faded to near extinction, a voice awakens them... "he is coming!". Slithering thru the crypt, they find their master sitting up in his coffin, and though their memories had faded their urge to serve their master remains as strong as ever.

I\'m loving the zombies, the zombie n his mate without a head is great really adds that comic touch which you do so well!!

I\'m liking what I see so far on the mini\'s with paint only thing I\'d say is the ones on the left and right look too \"alive\", maybe a light wash of purple might work in making them look a bit more dead.

I love what you did with those zombies. The bases also look fantastic. Are you planning to add more to your army?

I honestly think you are crazy. Another army? and it looking great, well done sir, well done.

I must say that i do really enjoy the details each of the units have, both in the basing/ extras and in the large frontal figures that you include.

Anywas, keep up the great work!

Definatly looking better, a unit of these is going to look great. The different colours on em all will make them look great. :D

Not much more done on this army since the last update, as I have been concentrating a bit on finishing up the gobbos. Public opinion seems to be weighing towards the winged vampire, which I also think is a pretty unique and interesting model. Should be a lot of fun to paint.

I did spend some time compiling a full list of all the stuff I have in the way of vampire counts.... beware though, it is a bit character heavy... and comprised of GW, Reaper, Confrontation, Gamezone, and a few other miniature companies.

Zacharias the Everliving on Zombie Dragon
Melkhior on Winged Nightmare (I suppose it could be an abysal terror or a hellsteed now)
Mannfred Von Carstein on Steed
Vlad Von Carstein
Konrad Von Carstein
Heinrich Kemmler
20 Vampires
8 Mounted Vampires
1 Vampire on Hellsteed
9 Necromancers
1 Mounted Necromancer
1 Wight Army Standard Bearer
8 Wight Kings
5 Mounted Wight Kings
1 Zombie Dragon
55 Skeletons
20 Pirate Skeletons
64 Zombies
14 Dire Wolves
30 Ghouls
4 Bat Swarms
2 Corpse Carts
16 Grave Guard
9 Hell Knights
10 Fell Bats
4 Spirit Hosts
5 Blood Knights
1 Vhargulf
5 Werewolves
8 Wraiths
5 Banshees
1 Black Coach...

To equal about 17,155 points if my math is correct.

HT: no worries if he doesn\'t make the cut mate, he will get painted up eventually. I have already painted the model once (sadly I sold it) but look forward to him again. For some reason I have always been fascinated by him.

Well, I went ahead and finished these three up last night, so hopefully it will give you a better idea of what the unit will look like in the end.

Yetie: They have had a bit of purple already, so I tried a bit of green wash on them just to try and subdue them a bit... let me know if you think it is working.

Too bad you can\'t add a sound byte from Michael Jackson\'s \"Thriller\" going haha.

Looking sweet! I almost want to start a count army now....

any updates? I love your core units in your armies, your zombie passing his friend his head has to be my favourite of yours so far, even with my love for night goblins!

First, I WANT TO APOLOGIZE FOR MY LONG ABSENCE. For those of you that don\'t know, I am in the military and I am sure you can figure out the rest. I cannot tell you how unbelievably good it feels to be painting again. None of the following are done, but I wanted to get some Work in Progress pics in to see what you guys think so far. Amazingly, these guys were still sitting in the exact same place they were when I left them (I have an amazing wife who simply left my paint station be the entire time I was gone).

The first is the reaper mini posed to look like he is going to punt the head of the zombie trying to get out of the ground. He will be getting a bit of gore on his stomach area and is some of the wound areas. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. I am still not altogether convinced on the skin at this point.

The skin, for those of you wondering: RMS Rosy Skin, followed by washes of brown, green, and purple, Rosy skin again, highlighted up with RMS Mouldy skin until it is finally just mouldy skin followed by a light wash of green and purple.

Here he is with the rest of the unit. I am still not altogether sold with the colors that I have chosen. I just am not sure that they are dirty or nasty enough, but I also don\'t want them to look sloppy.

And here are a few skeletons nearing the finish line. I am thinking a deeper red for the shield might be nice, but I don\'t want to go overboard with brighter colors as I am trying to present a faded, dead look. Thoughts?

First I would like to say that I love your VC work. Ive been a long time zombie fan my whole life and having recently started collecting and painting in this hobby, my first army choice was of course VC. I am painting my first regiment ever, a unit of skeletons and when I saw this thread while lurking I noticed how perfect the basing is. My painting I think is OK, but my basing technique is horrible. I love your bases and was wondering if you could share a bit about how you put them together, what products you used, and how you painted them. They look great. Thanks.

So, to give you all an idea of what I have been up to (so you don\'t think I am completely slacking off)...

Took the wife on vacation (hence the month since the last post). So, as far as this army goes, not a whole lot done. I have finished primering the rest of the zombie regiment, so I hope to start painting some more zombies soon - especially those cool scenic based ones as I think they are going to be a ton of fun.

Also, I know I promised to start a Bretonnian army last year after the last vote that you all put forward. I have since decided against it, as I want to wait for GW to produce the next army book first (if any of you remember my small 500 point chaos marauder army I painted last year you will know that it is now obsolete since I can\'t have demons any more...)...

And I have done a bit more work on the night goblin army, upgrading the list to a full two thousand points- so if you have time take a jump over to that thread when it pops up and let me know what you think.

Again, thanks for all the support.

RONIN: Well, welcome to the hobby mate, one of the best in the world. Thank you for the kind words. For base, most rank and file (unless I do a few models on one big base) are usually just a simple application of glue and a dip in the sand box (then painting of course). For some of the larger bases, I like to give the base a more uneven look, as most ground is not completely level. For this I lay down a layer of wall spackle, dry, then add sand. Of course, you can get quite a few different textures with the spackle as well, and could just as easily paint it up to look like a rock formation or something. Hope that helps.

Thomgirl: Thanks for smiling, my day is much brighter now in this cursed graveyard... ;)

Well folks, here is an update with pictures. I have done a little more work on the \"boss\", but the picture came out garbage so you will have to wait on that. Any tips on how to better difuse the light would be appreciated. I think part of my inspiration problems with this army is the color scheme... so...

I have adjusted one of the zombies. Instead of blue, I am going with a very muted green... and also adding stripes etc... Let me know what you think.

post-2668-1245608563_thumb.jpg

And I started work on the centerpiece, just the bones for now...

post-2668-1245608593_thumb.jpg

And finished the bone of another skeleton...

post-2668-1245608579_thumb.jpg

Not too bad for over a year (sarcasm...) Seriously, what else have I been up to lately... Travelling for work a bit (bout a week of the last two since the last update)... painting the gobbos a bit - did some of the squig hoppers and a little more on the spider rider... and did the beard on my dwarf warrior. Looking to corner the color scheme for the dwarf army, I am thinking blue and white as that is what I have painted my previous dwarfs in but I am up for suggestions.

Thanks again for all the help.
