Remember this thread?

I had a go...
It sucks :p

lol

Although, paradoxically, I\'m quite pleased with the hair - as I usually hate doing hair in a portrait ???

Anyway.
Anyone else tried following that tutorial?
Any other attempts to show?

I will try again soon and see if I improve lol

Well, everything is in the right place. That\'s a start. I guess it\'s just a matter of practice. Incidentally, you say you do portraits, maybe you could show us some of your paintings. :)

Yeah - it\'s ok proportionally etc I guess...

As for my portraits, I don\'t USUALLY paint, it\'s usually just pencil (or biro if it\'s not FOR someone lol)

But here are some for ya.

First is my best ever PAINTING (my nephews - done as a Xmas pressie for my sister n bro-in-law... Bout 3 years ago)

And this is the last commission I had.

Unfortunately, pencil doesn\'t often scan that well :p

Those are very good. Yeah, I can see some shading on the second one but it looks as though it\'s not been picked up too well in the scan. Did you study art at school/college?

Well, I guess they taught you something at your school (unlike mine) and you\'ve held your interest to keep working at it. I should have known you hadn\'t studied beyond that, after all, you didn\'t know who Marcel Duchamp was. :p

He may have played tennis, or exhibited a racket. By the way, did you use Pro Create for your little experiment?

EDIT: Here\'s a portrait of a couple of Old Gits.

Considering it\'s an entirely different medium and an entirely different scale, I don\'t think it turned out too badly. How big is the head you made?

Have you seen Napolean Dynamite? It was not meant as a comment on the quality in any way, the line just popped into my head when I saw the post. I thought it was funny. The line, not the picture.

I didn\'t do THAT specific tutorial, but I have been playing with another. Unfortunately, the link is at work and I don\'t have it handy. Since I was doing most of my heads from stuff for tacking up posters, they looked a lot worse. But, since it never dries out, I can roll it back into a ball over and over, and get a lot of practice. I don\'t really ever intend to sculpt. I was just a bit bored.

Yeah, I agree with this. Yellow Grey Milliput is a very different class of sculpting product to ProCreate. Try it with something a bit more \'proper\' and I think you\'ll have more success.

I may have a go at this tute. I already have a fairly set approach to making heads and this step by step\'s a bit different to how I do it, but there\'s no harm in having a go is there? Ears early is something that interests me. I usually do them at the end, but near the beginning of the process may add some balance to the overall look that I feel my stuff sometimes lacks.

I have no Green Stuff right now though so it will have to be in Super Sculpey for me, which is going to be slightly problematic I expect.

he thats a good start. i, too like the hair. maybe try some stuff in fimo over a dolly. it\'ll give you a longer working time so you can refine the shapes. start big the force yourself to down size. and the beauty with fimo is that once you are done, you can scrunch it up and start again. keep practicing. my first head was a lot worse that that

Yes - I was puzzled by that decision too, and found that I had to watch where I was putting my finger when sculpting a different area to avoid flattening them - I wouldn\'t do it like that again.

Also - when I\'d finished doing the other areas, the ears had almost cured and doing the ridges etc was nigh-on impossible.

I think some of that tute could also do with some explanation as to how much the area should cure before starting to sculpt it...

I\'ll have to try and contact the author and see if I can convince him to translate it over here... :)

EDIT: Gah, I\'m not having much luck... :p
Anyhoo... Good idea with the blutac, though I can\'t see it holding shape very well lol

FIMO is also an idea, but I find it quite hard to use... I\'ll give it a go sometime tho...
