My (1st) attempt at that brilliant head sculpting tute

Procreate starts stiffer than GS. There\'s generally no waiting for it to cure. With GS, most sculptors find the added stiffness of allowing it to set up for 30 minutes helpful.

would mixing the 2 help???? just curious as I\'m about to embark on the same thing as DaN here.. not bad first attempt really chief....little bit of trimming here and there and that\'s a pretty cool head....

A day of Wii bowling and watching footie and rugby has perhaps rendered me with lower sobriety levels than I really need for this task. I had a go anyhow. It was all going OK until I got to the eyes, and then everything started getting squished in the wrong places! I don\'t think the constant softness of sculpey really helped either, but I kinda gave up trying to refine it much at that point. But anyway, enough excuses! Here ya go.

And yeah, fraid I just gave up once I got to the ears and realised I\'d obliterated them while working on the rest of the face. So the rough shape of a hood is all you get!

NICE lono :p
You definitely got the lower portion and jawline better than I have :)

But then I just realised how I can get away with whatever I like for that sculpt :p

I shall make him undead! And then any imperfections can be explained away! lol

JEEEEANYUS!

Started working on the body...
Thank God for artists\' anatomy books :p

Yes - I know he has hardly any neck - consider him hunched or something :p

I know there are some proportional inconsistencies there - I\'d appreciate some help pointing them out.
Particularly that I can see is that his hips and arse need to be a bit wider - as with his shoulders and trunk - which I am in the process of doing.

Also - his pecs need to be enlarged, but that was before I did the head - which ended up being a bit bigger than I aimed for lol

I WANT to sculpt, the thing is whatever I try to sculpt ends up in the bin - I\'m quite quite despaired.
green stuff and procreate... any schools, courses, books, online tuts you could recommend?

arrrrgh!

There have to be dozens of sculpting tutorials online, of varying levels. Lots of links here but don\'t overlook the articles on CMON here. The guides online go from starting stuff like a detailed look at armatures through the entire process of a sculpt, like here and here (BIG pic links at bottom).

But if you have trouble getting anything that you consider worthwhile I\'d strongly recommend starting with conversions/additions to existing minis. It\'s much easier to begin this way than from a \'blank canvas\'; that\'s how I started.

Well, he\'s coming along - I\'m working with the \"Gradually add small blobs\" method lol

Takes a while as each time you have let an area cure so you don\'t squash all the detail flat :p

More photos to come.

One of the best ways! I\'m adding a new head to an Enigma figure at the moment and it\'ll probably end up with six or seven applications of putty on the head alone by the time I\'m done. So far there\'s been:
basic face + underlayers of hair;
nose + taller cranium + basic mouth + chin whiskers;
eyes + moustache + more hair.

Well here is some more progress... I\'m not so sure... Maybe it\'s just the lack of contrast with the putty...

hmm he seems a little long in the torso. tery cutting out a v shape below his abs:

and stick it on to his pelvis

Yeah - he does LOOK rather long - I thought that myself, but it\'s actually in proportion (Referencing my anatomy books)

Besides - I dunno why I\'m even bothering to detail his chest and back when they\'re likely to be covered up - I\'ve decided how I\'m going to dress and theme him now...

Well if you are following proper human anatomy shouldn\'t he be rather more like this?

But I have to agree with freakinacage, you\'d be better off chopping out the over long torso. When sculpting you have to mix it up a little. You aren\'t going for complete replication of standard anatomy, rather the illusion of anatomy.

yeah i didn\'t look at head size, just the ratios of muscle groups in the torso. building up may be a good option

I think beefing up is the easier option, as cutting it now would be a bitch.

But yeah - as a first attempt he ain\'t gonna be perfectly in proportion, so he\'ll just be lanky :p

no it\'s not, if you beef him up you will have to beef up the face aswell.

cut or saw away part that is too much, it will be much better that way.

Hello Dan, must say, really good sketching and paintiing skills!!! Regarding the sculpt, I struggle with anatomy and i think as someone has already mentioned the best way to start is with conversions as this helps you learn the anatomy and to control the quantities of putty you use more easily. Otherwise maybe do some monsters and no one can say its anatomy is wrong. I like the face you did on it, its characterful though not technically perfect. Why else do I like it? Because he looks like Homer Simpson (with hair) chewing a swarm of bees.

Gee, thanks DFB :p
You mean Abe Simpson :p lol

Well I\'ll fill out the torso some more and see what y\'all think.

TBH I\'m more after pointers for NEXT time, but if it really DOES look wrong, I\'ll see about chopping him :p

For now, here\'s some more progress.

I\'ve had another look and I\'m thinking the chopping option is more likely...

Originally I thought if I beefed out the torso and lessened the crotch area  lol
That maybe I could just raise his waist once I start to sculpt the clothing, but then I thought it might throw off other areas...

My problem is - how would I best chop it?
I have a small fret saw, which could do the job, but the problem then would be securing him without breaking him...

I could also spend AGES carving through him with a knife, but that seems a bit rediculous.

Anyone think of a way to secure him better?
Maybe some sort of makeshift gaffer-tape rig? lol
