My first zombies

Well, not technically my first. I did paint a zombie years ago, pre-CMON.

Anyway, I agreed to paint a squad of zombies for a pal and as zombies aren\'t my thing, I\'m finding it very hard so I\'ve opened my first WIP thread ever.

So, here are some of the fellows. Tell me what you think and what I should be doing differently.
(please note I added the dangling eyeball, but my pal assembled and primed the models before handing them to me)

go for dirty, this is where you research things on rotten or ogrish.

also watch some good zombieflicks for an idea of how they would look walking.

but dirty, dead and nasty....add purples, blues, greens and dark reds and browns to the skin to make them seem more dead. add wet spots (varnish or ink) here and there in different colours to represent water, blood, goo etc

I agree with skarekrow, go for dirty with washes of reds, greens and browns, but DO NOT go overboard, as this can lead to your carefully painted minis looking a mess...

Great start and there seems to be a lot of personality showing in the poses and combinations that your friend has chosen. I tend to prefer zombies with a paler/more washed out colouring than the GW brighter green style but that\'s just personal preference. Definitely go with plenty of aging/bloodying/rusting etc and these are going to look excellent.

These are very cool Vince...especially like the one with his brain exposed.

I am actually working on these same fellas too. Of course I am big into zombies right now....

this is how i did mine...
basecoat:50/50 mix camo green,rotting flesh.
first highlight 50/50 rotting flesh, commando kaki.
second highlight commando kaki,bleached bone.
then glaze with a mix of purple and red (a bit of black can be added here to darken some areas),just do a couple of layers untill it looks about nasty enough :)after that add some white for the last highlight...very simple effective,dead-like,disgusting zombie style :]

cheers Ryan

Well, I\'ll tell you how I did the skin anyway.

The greenish ones are GW Rotting Flesh with a blue ink wash.
The brownish ones are GW Rotting Fles with GW \"Flesh Wash\".
That\'s it.

I haven\'t made much progress, but I\'m still on these. I set them aside while painting IP III, but we get a few days between rounds so I\'ll keep slogging away.

In the meantime here\'s a closer pic of the eye.

egads vince, thats disgusting!

I think the skin looks good, but just adding a thin wash in areas with a bluish or purplish color would give great depth.

Try a base of shadow grey highlighted through to rotting flesh, it sounds like it shouldn\'t work but it does???

did some of those minis years ago, they have so many little pieces of clothing that you should make many of those the same color. I didn\'t and it just took me for ages to get them done - can\'t actually remember if I ever finished them:duh:

Well, as you can see, blue pants/loin cloths is a consistent element.
I\'ll get another pic of that guy in blue pants up soon as I have converted his shirt into a striped one.

glazing with brown/orange and then highlighting with chainmail... the glaze again, then highlight then glaze then.... you get my point. you do this untill you are finnished :)

I hope that helps :)

New Guy

This guy was supposed to be part of the zombie pirate project, but he\'s taken a detour to the future to star in the next Matrix film: Matrix Reanimated.
I\'m sure my friend won\'t mind the high-tech guns for his WFB empire undead army.

I had started him just suggestive of the Matrix, but still carrying old flintlock pistols and having the split-tail coat and a sword, but I decided to go all out so I removed the sword, replaced the hands and guns, filled in the back of the coat, gave him the leg strap.
I have since reprimed him so he\'s currently all black.

Honestly, I think the last one is a bit silly, but the rest is very promising. I have only painted 5 zombies the last couple of years myself so I\'m not exactly an expert but I chose to give them the same basic skintone to give them coherence and then made differences by drybrushing small patches of skin with different browns and greens, finishing off with a combination of yucky washes.
Like Highbulp Billy I\'m not in favour of the green look, so I chose a base of scorched brown/elf flesh/rotting flesh and then added rotting flesh and bleached bone towards the highlights.
The rusted stuff I have had most success with was based on a Painting Workshop for ogres in WD: I start with vermin brown, stipple with vermin/orange and then orange, and then I begin painting in the metal areas (drybrushing if I\'m sloppy, but I can see you\'re not).
Hope you can use some of this. Your work looks good and I\'m looking forward to see what I\'m sure will be a great result.
