Non-Americans can be sooo gullible

An Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonator conducted a joke interview said he would blow up the moon to solve the earth\'s weather problems and to stop PMS.

Now Canadian, UK and even Indian newspapers and news websites are crediting this to the actual governor of California.

Schwarzie\'s in California.... those people have a penchant for electing actors...second or third rate...mind you, they did go a step up with Arnold. lol

Well, on that note...

I don\'t know about Arnold, he just won \'cause he\'s cool.

But as far as that other lame @ss goes, I still haven\'t found one person who voted for him. I\'ve come to the conclusion that we don\'t actually elect our officials, the republicans just make a big show of it every four years to make us feel like we do.

actually...

we just learned about this in American Govt. as a people, we do not ellect presidents. not even when we check the little \"bush/cheney\" or \"kerry/edwards\" box in the voting booth! thats actually voting for the list of 25 people in the Electoral college. the peoples popular vote elects the list that each candidate came up with who then votes. So democracy is a little twisted...but who didnt know that :D

*looks around* alright guys, enough of the looks, ill go back to my own little world of studying.....*runs away*

well he still did win the popular vote, so electoral college buisnesse dosn\'t change a thing. As opposed to the first election :p

I voted for W. And I think the electoral college was a good idea. Read Alex Hamilton\'s federalist paper on factions. Yay for foresight.

I disagree. I think the time for the value of the electoral college is past.
Electors were supposed to go and debate over who they would vote for. Now their vote is determined pre-debate, and if they try to vote against the pre-ordained candidate, they are removed and replaced with someone who will vote that way.
I also disapprove of the \"all-or-nothing\" method of nearly all the states regarding their electoral votes.

Okay, I give in. I never meant to imply that Americans aren\'t gullible. The majority here seems to think the President\'s plan for Social Security will actually work. Heck, the majority bought the image that Kerry was a flip-flopper and Bush the straight and narrow, despite the exact opposite evidenced in Kerry\'s senate record and Bush\'s gubernatorial record.

However, no American news source was duped into believing an impersonator on the Howard Stern show was actually an exclusive interview on policy with the governor of California (where it would have been 4:00 am at the time).

there are 4 bills proposed right not to reform the electoral college. I think the college stops it from being a \"beauty contest\" but it is far from being accurate. and the all or nothing bugs the crap outta me. :D

@markus-tay Voted for W and Ahnold.

As far as being an actor.....Everybody came from somewhere. We all used to do something before we got to where we are now. My job history dosnt define who I am. I have heard alot of derision directed at Arnie and Reagan for being actors. Yet many, many of those who are trotted out to oppose them are actors, re. previous thread.

With all due respect when president are beeing elected on the basis of their believs on abortion and such other \'moral\' issues I think it can be called a \'beauty\' contest. I don\'t recall seeing much \'real\' politique beeing discussed in american news paper during the election. Might just be an impretion though. But electoral colledge dosn\'t stop it from beeing a beauty contest in my opinion. On the other hand it does allow a president to be ellected without having the majority of votes.
And if my conception of american laws is correct it will never get reformed as all states would have to approve the bill wich will never happen.

Ah...politics. I\'m not nearly as liberal as some of my compatriots, but I can find some solace in thinking \"LESS THAN four more years\".

Granted, I\'m from the liberal part of a mostly democratic state and surrounded by artists and theatre folks. I don\'t exactly often get good solid views from the conservative side.

As for changing the electoral college, would it be through constitutional ammendment? If so, then it only needs a certain percentage of states to ratify it, not 100%. Given our patchwork red/blue what-the-heck-ever political culture around here, it would be a cold day downstairs if we could get 100% of the states to agree on practically anything. :p

yeah it would have to be a amendment requiring 3/4th of congress and presidential ratification

@arthur- while not alot of stictly political talk is found while campaigining, abortion and stem cell research is almost political ;) and my books defination of beauty contest is a \"presidential primary in which contending candidates compete for popular votes but the results have little or no impact on the selection of delegates to the national convention, which is made by the party elite\" i dont know if that makes more sense but i know that the electoral college makes the popular vote about abortion and ect. not matter as much, whether that is a good thing or not.

:D
