I was just thinking that even though we seem to have painters from all major US cities we are lacking painters from the biggest of them, NYC. Are there less painters in NYC then in the rest of the country ?
And I also remember looking for mini stores in NYC on the internet and not finding any, is the whole city deserted by the mini comunity :|

Isn\'t there a GW store downtown Manhattan..around Broadway and 8th street?

Forbidden Planet on 13th and Broadway?

Aren\'t Bobby Wong and Victor Hardy in the NYC vicinity?

As for not many mini stores, given their razor thin margins and New York\'s high rents, it would be hard to survive. But they must exist.

Well, I am from NYC, although I am not sure whether I deserve to be named \"painter\". Looking for something in this city is somewhat challenging, because rather often you will not have NYC in the address line unless it is actually on Manhattan. Nonetheless, we have 4 GW stores and I am aware of at least 4 independents - one of them is my paint supplier. I am sure, there are more that I just don\'t know about.

Just about 3 weeks ago local GW community had a \"Demon in the City\" painting competition and winning entries are still on display in \"participating\" GW stores. I am not sure about how many painters are out there and how we compare to the other cities. This particular completion had about 130-140 submissions.

Former NYC painter

I was in NYC until a couple of years ago, and I started a yahoo group called NYC_mini-painters for those of you who might be interested. I still meet up with my friends from the group at Gen Con.

When I left, there were three GW stores in Manhattan, one on Broadway and 8th, one on the Upper East side on 1st somewhere and one on the Upper West side. Forbidden Planet had stopped selling minis, but they were still a great place for lots of other goodies.

There was also Neutral Ground, a true gaming store. They actually had gaming tables, though there selection of stuff was not excessive. I forget exactly where they were, somewhere on the west side near 23rd I think (Yes, I haven\'t been back to NYC since I moved:() . Then there was the Compleat Strategist, and they had an excellent selection, but little room for demos or anything like that. That one is near the Empire State building.

Most of the time though, we ended up going out to Jersey or Long Island for our mini fix, just because, like someone else mentioned, rents are high in NYC, so stores there are thing on the ground or sell mostly high margin stuff like GW and card games.

Yeah I\'ve been up to NYC a couple times and went to the GW store on 82nd St and 3rd Ave in front of Food Emporium. Met a really cool GW staff guy named Stuart Wellington (yeah I know Cool+GWstaff=Oxymoron)... a very talented painter too... I went there while I was visiting my wife while she was doing an internship with Telemundo 47 in Ft Lee, NJ... great place to walk but very small stores though...

Whoops it was third ave and not first (for some reason I thought it was the same street as my vet was :D ). I remember Stuart, he was really nice. Glad to hear he is still there! I liked that store better than the one down by Union Square because the people working there were a lot nicer (and more understanding of someone who didn\'t really care about the games but just wanted to paint).

Cool! I bought some GW scenery for my Cities of Death Table (its not a CoD table if you dont have at least 1 Manufactorum...) there and he actually talked to me about painting too, not trying to get me to buy the whole damn store like other GW stores I have been to *cough..Florida..cough*
