Ogre Conversion (updated:painting)

My local gaming club is doing a contest. Its called Build a Better Ogre. You get enough bits to build a standard ogre and then you are allowed to do what ever you want with it just as long as you can see the main ogre body in it somewhere. I thought of doing a 40K Ogryn but in the end I desided that since I had an ogre army in the wings, I would do an ogre character. I went with the butcher because, well, I just like him and I haven\'t had any reason to sculpt an apron on anything yet so yipee. Here is how he came out so far. My favorite parts are the two apples on the barrel (he\'ll probably be hungry when he is done ripping this poor guy apart) and the hammer holder which of course you cant see from these angles.
I have two weeks left in the competition so I have to start painting frantically. Anyways, what do you think? and any suggestions for skin color? Thanks!

that looks sweet.

for the skin you should start with a base coat of 50/50 shadow grey/ graveyard earth, then highlight this progressively with kommando khaki.

Quality stuff Ollie, as usual! The sculpting is really smooth, everything is seamless and works really well together.

as for the skin tone, I think something pale would suit him well; although you won\'t be able to see that much skin because he will be covered in blood I guess lol

Your sculpting is very good on this guy. The one thing that I feel is letting it down is the blade that replaced his hand. I think the teeth are to large and too few for it to be usable really. It is sort of minor I guess... The rest looks great for sure though.
I think a paler cooler colour scheme for the skin would be best, something that would contrast well with gore and blood that would be on him.

Thanks for the comments. Bill, you bring up an interesting point about all the blood. I am a bit concerned about how much blood to have all over the place. I\'m thinking that maybe since the empire guy has been ripped in half before being decapitated, that most of the blood would have drained out of his body before the head was removed. Would this be logical? Or should I just put blood spray everywhere and call it a day...:D Either way, I am definately leaning towards a lighter skin tone. That way the tats will show up better!

edit: and Bill, brush licking does make you a better painter!!! Although glaze medium tastes a bit off!lollollol

I would stick to blood on the saw arm and the hand holding the head with maybe a splash of blood around the stomach area..........Arteries are messy things.

Defo on the pale skin colour, I hate the GW grey ogres........try adding a slight flesh tone, so he looks a little bit more alive.

Glaze medium is horrible!

Considering he lopped his noggin off there would have been a huge spray of blood upwards from the neck (im thinking Kill Bill here) So there would probably be a huge splatter in a vertical line right the way up the Ogre.

This is how I imagine them to be like

Okay, so I started painting this guy...for some reason I started with the base this time...maybe because I am still not sure about the ogres skin color. Anyways, the base is not quite done yet, I still need a couple more highlights...add buttons to the victims shirt, put a new stem on the apple (I accedently knocked it off while painting). I also need to put the blood splatter all over the guy, but I want to do that at the same time I do the splatter on the oger himself so that it is uniform. Anyways, what do you think so far?

Looking good so far with some very nice conversion work, although I do prefer Butchers who look a bit more rank and disgustingly over the top. This guy is more like a badass hungry Ogre than a Butcher to me. Perhaps the painting, with a suitable amount of splatter, will sort it out.

The base is looking dandy so far too.

@ d56 Honestly, its not that much in prize support. I think you get maybe 10 or 20 bucks for getting best of show. Everything else is a couple bucks here and a couple bucks there. Now if you win the RTT, you get 100.00. I found that out by winning the last 40K RTT at OrkCon.:bouncy: If you are going just to win money...then you probably shouldn\'t go. The cool thing is that the next con should (possibly) be sponsored by Reaper so there may be more prize support. Just remember...\"If your not first, your last!\" Oops, thats Ricky Bobby! Here you go...\"If you don\'t enter, you can\'t win\" Anyways, you should swing by. I think they are going to do some painting classes/demos as well so that would be cool.

@ Ogrebane: The barrel was pretty straight forward. I painted it P3 Bloodstone Brown for the base coat, then did a little shading in the cracks with a Bloodstone/Black glaze. When that was dry I added P3 Rucksack Tan the Bloodstone and made little streaks on the barrel planks. Lastly I did a very light glaze of the Rucksack tan (probably a 10:1 mix with glaze medium) and did a couple of layers with that right over the streaks. That helped blend them in without getting rid of them alltogether. Kind of the same effect when people do a skintone glaze over a tatoo or something...it just ties it in nicely.

Anyways, thanks again for the comments...I really got to get moving on the Ogre. ONE WEEK TILL I HAVE TO TURN HIM IN!:(
