Guys and gals, I have taken control of the miniature painting contest at Strategicon (Orccon, Gamex and Gateway) and have already planned bigger events for this upcoming Orccon to coincide with the Broadside Bash and other events. I have done away with the GW specific categories and the prizes will now be bigger and better.
For this first event in February, I was able to increase the dealer dollar prizes for each category and plan to include trophies of some kind (still working on the details).
For future events, there will be an actual sculpted trophy (probably from Ben Siens of Crocodile Games, Reaper, Privateer Press) handed out in Gold, Silver and Bronze.
In the meantime, help make the Strategicon painting contests excitng again by entering your models this February at Orccon.
I am footing most of the bill for this so please, if you have models to enter, do so, what do you have to loose, except maybe your pride!
Aaron (olliekickflip) has agreed to participate as a co-judge. He can be bribed with Loose women, old school Black Primer and the small ducks off of the Brettonian Peasants sprue. I take my women manly.
The event is listed below

Strategicon Miniature Painting Contest
Hosted by Conquest Miniatures
Submit your fully painted miniatures at the Conquest Miniatures Booth. Submissions will be accepted up until 12:00 noon Sunday. Entries must be submitted in person by the painter themselves. Entries must be the work of the painter submitting them, or else be disqualified. Winning entries from previous years or other competitions may not be submitted.
CATEGORIES: (Contestants may only submit one entry per category.)
There are eleven regular categories and they are:
1 – Fantasy Single Miniature: This category covers all single 25mm-35mm human-sized and smaller models. Models should be on appropriately sized bases. The majority of miniatures fit into this size range. The upper limit may reasonably include things like an Orc on a boar, or other single horse or similarly mounted model, which may qualify if within size limits. Judges reserve the right to move entries intended for Single category to Large.
2 – Fantasy Unit: This category is for groups of two to twelve miniatures grouped together as a cohesive unit. Entries should follow legal games system rules for units where available. Entries may be large or small for Squad Category. It is suggested you use some form of tray for large units, but it is not required.
3 – Fantasy Large: This category covers all miniatures larger than a normal 28mm human-sized model. This may include models such as dragons or other large monsters, Confrontation Wolfen, Large Resin models etc.
4 – Science fiction Single Miniature: This category covers all 25mm-35mm human-sized and smaller models. Models should be on appropriately sized bases. The majority of miniatures fit into this size range. The upper limit may reasonably include Space Marine Terminators, mounted cavalry and bikes, which may qualify if within size limits. Judges reserve the right to move entries intended for Single category to Large.
5 – Science Fiction Unit: This category is for groups of two to twelve miniatures grouped together as a cohesive unit. Entries should follow legal games system rules for units where available. Entries may be large or small for Squad Category. It is suggested you use some form of tray for large squads, but it is not required.
6 – Science Fiction Large: This category covers all miniatures larger than a normal 28mm human-sized model. This may include models such as Tanks and similar vehicles, large monsters, 54mm Inquisitor scale, Large Resin pieces, etc.
7 – Historical Single Miniature: This category covers all 25mm-35mm human-sized and smaller. The majority of miniatures fit into this size range. The upper limit may reasonably include mounted cavalry and bikes, which may qualify if within size limits. Judges reserve the right to move entries intended for Single category to Large.
8 – Historical Unit: This category is for groups of two to twelve miniatures grouped together as a cohesive unit. There is no need to follow any game system rules for squad sizes, but it should look like a squad or unit! Entries may be large or small for Squad Category. It is suggested you use some form of tray for loose squads, but is not required.
9 - Historical Large: This category covers all miniatures larger than a normal 28mm human-sized model. This may include models such as tanks or similar vehicles, large scale models, Busts, etc.
10- Strategikids: This is a separate category for contestants 14 years of age and under. This category is not split. Any model of any scale may be entered and is intended for beginning kid painters.
11 – Open: This category is not for the faint of heart. Entries can be anything from a single model straight out of the package to a sweeping diorama with dozens of figures. Have dueling dragons, blown up tanks or a completely scratch built model? This is where it goes. Keep in mind that anybody can enter here, from professional painters and sculptors, to first time brush wielders. The only restriction is entries can be no larger than 18x18x18”.

All entries must be in good taste and are subject to disqualification if the Judges decide that any common rule has been violated.
Trophies will be awarded for Gold, Silver, and Bronze...1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively, along with Honorable Mention. One entry will be singled out for Overall Best of Show.
Display bases are not considered for purposes of size restrictions, or for judging of the miniature itself. Conversions and base scenics may contribute overall to a miniatures ranking, but are not the primary consideration for judging. Judges will rank entries based upon painting technique, neatness, skill in execution, coherent color scheme, and overall appearance. The judging team consists of notable artists in the mini-painting community who are well-versed in the craft, and their decisions are final.
*****
The greatest care will be afforded to all entries, by staff who shares a passion for the miniature-painting hobby. However, Strategicon and Conquest Miniatures staff, volunteers, and judges cannot be held responsible for damaged or lost miniatures. We will do our best to ensure the safety of all entries.
All entries must be reclaimed by noon on Monday. Entries must be reclaimed by the person submitting them unless plans have been established and approved before hand. ID may be required.
All entries will be photographed, and submission into the competition indicates permission for Strategicon and Conquest Miniatures to use such images for any purpose, including posting to the online photo gallery.
