Otherworld Medusa (First Ever Attempt At Greyscale Painting)

Just thought I would put this up to show you guys what I am working on at the moment. I was asked by Richard of Otherworld miniatures if I would paint up one of his Medusa sculpts sculpted by Kev White, after looking at his site at the one already done I fuigured I couldn't better that so wanted to take a different approach on her.
So I decided to have a go at monochrome and see if I could get it down and looking right.

and again with the dress nearly done and a better background though this colour background does give me a few set up problems for taking the pics.

I think I am on the right track, any thoughts.

I am nowhere near experienced enough to give critique, but I personally love how it is looking so far. I envy your light color blending mine is never that smooth.

Wow, interesting idea, that's looking quite nice...wish I could blend as smoothly as you have here. My only comment would be one of personal preference, which is that I would prefer the dress to be a little bit darker to provide a bit more contrast with the skin.

Blending is nice and smooth and like the choice of "shades" across the model except for the sandal straps they seem to dark cutting off the legs stopping the flow of the model. Also is it me or does that look more like a guy in drag than medusa?

Thanks guys, the sandals are not done yet as for the ugliness yes she is ugly but she is not supposed to be beautiful as she was punished for proclaiming herself the most beautiful women on earth and the goddess Hera (I think) who turned her into a Gorgon, thus any man who should look upon her with his own eyes would be turned instantly to stone, the mythical creature was part snake too but i do like this version I think Kev White has made a cracking unique version of her.

Hi Tidoco, nice brushwork :good: Most of the Monochrome minis I've seen turn out to be more "Spielberg's Schindler's List little girl in a red dress" type uses of a dramatic spot colour rather than a true exercise in black through white. It's interesting to see. Particularly brave I thought not to keep the dress essentially black but the difference between cloth & flesh is consistent throughout, very nice.

Once the monochrome is done are you going to try glazing in a full set of colours? A technique I've read of but not come close to experimenting with, not even a zenithal white undercoat over black :)

Cheers, B.
