Paint Q\'s - Adikolor and Vallejo

Hi all. I just started painting this month, and I have some questions about paint. I started with the Reaper Learn to Paint kits, so I have 2 each of the basic colours. I\'m trying to decide what to buy in addition - whether to just buy single colours, or take the plunge for a package deal even if it means I end up with a few duplicates.

From reading the forums, it\'s clear a lot of people think pretty highly of Vallejo paints. I like the Reaper paints, but the dropper bottle style looks pretty good to me. Would people say there\'s much of a difference between the Vallejo game colour and the model colour lines? I notice the model colour is cheaper in several stores, and it has a lot more colours. Since there don\'t seem to be any huge specials on getting the full 60 game colours, I\'m debating whether to just pick and choose colours, and I\'d like to know whether or not to consider the model colours when doing that.

I found a big special on the new Adikolor line. I heard they gave out samples of this paint at GenCon and some other cons. Did anyone here have the opportunity to try it? It, too, comes in dropper bottles, and seems very reasonably priced. The promo info says it was developed with the input of a 9 times GD winner.

In case anyone is interested, the special is 59 paints, one empty bottle, 4 brushes, 2 minis and a carrying case, with free shipping, for the price of 60 paints, so $40 off. Here\'s a link to the special offer.

Never used Adikolor..

but I did hear from someone in another forum that they were involved in some testing at the last gencon and the paints were terrible and the adikolor people had to go back to the production board for those. Adikolor also makes me suspicious for reasons I don\'t know I should go into here.

I use vallejo paints extensively and, except for a few colors here and there from GW and Reaper, practically exclusively. The pigmentation content is great and you still get fair coverage with thinned paints.

The model line is geared towards historical/military miniatures, so many of the colors are subdued and have funny names that have absolutely no meaning to me (there\'s about 4 greens that look almost the same with different uniform names, for example). The model colors seem to be thicker than the game colors. The game colors are runny and I have trouble with getting the right ratio of thinner to paint with them, but part of that is my own struggle to learn as a painter.

Must haves in the Vallejo line definately include the smoke. Black red, pale sand, and brown rose are also ones that I have found many versatile uses for. :)

Oh, the game color line also has the advantage that they\'re very close to the colors of the GW paints with the same/similar names.

Thanks for the feedback GarnetJubilee, it\'s much appreciated! I admit to being a little curious about what makes you suspicious about Adikolor in general, but I don\'t want to pry if you don\'t feel comfortable discussing it. I\'m not 100% decided yet, but you\'ve certainly given me some great food for thought in making the decision.

Thanks also for the names of some specific Vallejo colours you like, that\'s very handy to know if I decide to go with buying singles.
