Ratings over-reactions ...

It is Cool Mini or Not, so they must not have thought it was cool.

Now for my personal rant:
I\'m sick of people rating minis solely on how they are painted. Sure a good paintjob can knock me out and get a great score, but a moderate paintjob with an interesting and well executed style can rate just as well. Again, it is \"Cool Mini or Not,\" not \"Is My Mini Well Painted or Not.\"

Just to stick my nose in where it doesn\'t belong....

I hear a lot of comments about \"it\'s style\" or \"it\'s creativity\" or \"it\'s originality\" or \"it\'s when a mini has character\" that make a mini cool.

Load of fetid dingoes kidneys.
Most of my stuff is creative, original, characterful, but it doesn\'t fit the preconceived notions of the general public so I am still lucky to get a 7.

But then, I\'m not aiming for 9s, I\'m aiming for enjoying myself. So I let a comment like \"space marines don\'t use x weapon\" roll off me because I don\'t even play the game. I just think it looks cool.

EB is a good guy. I can\'t see how that thing could be rated lower than Left Talon of Roc, but at least he owned up to his comment and didn\'t just vote 2 and move on.

p.s. I just re-read the comments on Left Talon of Roc to see if EB (or TM) had left a comment, but no.
It was pretty fun reading the comments though. That sort of thing still makes this place fun for me.

Naturally, I was going to say that, to each his own. The problem is that a mini that isn\'t quite a 9 or 10 paintwise generally will not score any higher if other bits (conversion, style, feeling, etc.) are great. To each his own.

Vince:
Perhaps your groundbreaking artistic message with \"Left Talon of Roc\" is wasted on this site. In regards to this piece, we must try to get into the artists head to imagine the intense emotional outpouring that must have catalyzed the creation of this piece. I, for one, think it is genius.
I do love the comments on that mini.
\"Maybe your score would improve if you flocked your base.\"
Classic.

Let me be honest:
As this picture was submitted 28th September 2005, the comments are of the same vintage And a moderator has passed them
What\'s the problem?

As both Ebonbuddha and Tony Manero give honest critiques, I don\'t see a problem with what has been said.
Some people might always want their comments to be Sugar coated, but that doesn\'t always happen. Their comments are in a different style to mine but are no less valid.

EB provided an accurate statement, neither he nor Tony flamed or attacked the guy so neither of these regular commentators deserve to be hammered in the forums in this manner.

I could name and shame other commentators, who are far less polite, one of whom only attacks low scoring new-ish posters and yet he never has been singled out like this, but will not as to me it \'s pushing the limits of one of the forum rules.

This kinda speaks to the point I was trying to make.

Your comments are taken more seriously because of how you say it...not what you say. Personal credibility is always stronger than the actual veracity.

Personally, I have absolutely no problem with the comments that were made.

In my above post, I was simply giving my honest critique of the situation and offering constructive criticism...

I\'m sorry if I offended those so quick to offend others....(damn..more irony..go figure) :D

Cheers!

Hope I didn\'t offend anyone with this post - was not my intention - and I did not notice the date - it was a random that appeared while I was browsing.

My sole point was that imo the original comments seemed to be purely fluff fascism, and yes, althought the actual photo is rubbish, the painting isn\'t that bad - at least 4-5.

Probably a mistake to have made a thread about it though ... I seem to remember also that I posted that thread at like 3am (Damn my insomnia :p)

Sorry EB (And TM if you\'ve read this).

Everyone does have their only style of not only painting and converting, but also of rating and judging other peoples work - so yes, people should learn to just roll with the punches and take criticism the way it was intended.

I\'ve been debating weither I should get into this discussion or not, but I think I will.

I grew up in a house of musicians. Critisism was an everyday thing, both good and bad. We were taught both how to give and how to take it because we were also taught how important self improvement was and how important being objective about one\'s own work was (never really can be totally objective about your own work but you got to try). A big part of it is to own up to your emotional attachment to your \"piece\" and try to listen to the critisism without those emotions attached (try getting \"criticsm from you a-hole older brother some time. You grow a thick skin after that).

The point I\'m trying to make is that there are ways to deliver critisism AND to recieve it. There\'s nothing wrong with pointing out the flaws of something and pointing out what someone did well in the same conversation. People need to know thier strenths as well as thier weaknesses. How can they improve if they don\'t know both? And how can a person improve if they can\'t hear the \"this really sucked and YOU know you can do better\" without it ruining thier life for a month/week/day/year? It\'s a two way thing.

Personally, I\'m confident enough to know I have certain strengths but I may not know all of them. And that I have weaknesses but may not know all of them. I would prefer harsh critiscism to pink cloud stuff because it makes me look at things differently and maybe see what I missed. But I also know not everyone has had the training in this I have had and may take what I say wrong.

When I write something about someone\'s work I try to point out both what I think they are strong at (even if it\'s just that they have a good color sense) and what I think they need to improve. And I only post comments on what I feel I can critique well. If I don\'t know the \"fluff\" behind something and it\'s important to the piece I won\'t say anything (space marines and power armor are a big example of this).

Don\'t know if any of this makes any sense, but I feel this discussion is 1) over something that is ancient history (look at the dates on the piece) and 2) something everyone has a different oppinion about so something that will always be an issue.

I feel a calming of the sea, after a rather chopy storm. I think we all learnt that people are different (no surprise there then) and that all in all what we want is comments that get to the point. Now seeing as it friday and coming up to what should be a hell of a goodweekend lets all chill out and have a few :beer:
