Yep, i use to play this at my mates house. But i don\'t think i ever got past the first level!
(This was the game where the 1st level was a training one on tatooine or something, and you had to fly through a canyon...right?)
I\'m pretty sure that was Rebel Assault.

X-Wing was a fantastic game, and one of the first games I purchased for my PC waaaay back when I converted from Amiga. And of course I had the B-Wing addon. And Tie Fighter was great.

We were all so geeked about X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter because of the 3d acceleration support, but it just never really captured us the way the software rendered originals did.

I picked up Mechwarrior II at the same garage sale. Haven\'t gotten round to playing it. Manual is pretty complex.

I played the 1st Mechwarrior game when it came out and it was excellent. I only had a keyboard but I played with my roommate. It was hilarious. I drove the mech while he operated the weapons. Sometimes we would both be slamming keys at the same time, cutting each other out, but we still kicked ass.
Key to winning Mechwarrior? Always think below the waist.:D;)

[edit]
Gilvan, thanks for the link. That\'s exactly what I needed.
Of course it\'s been fun figuring it out on my own. Yesterday for instance I realized for the first time that I can link my missles to fire 2 at once. That means I can take out a corvette before it fires a shot.

Looks like pilot communication was the only thing I didn\'t figure out on my own - well, that and how to eject.

MEchwarrior 2 is excellent. Mercenaries is the best of the bunch IMHO. Number 3 or was it 4, I wasn\'t impressed with. That had great graphics but you traveled around with this convoy of three trucks and they could repair your mech at any time, took all the challenge out of it.

The true joy of Mechwarrior came from playing it online in arena matches vs other players. It was one of my first online games, and it was one I was Damn good at.

Best Mech ever was a small sized one with a flamer and axe, I would dart around flaming like mad, cause the oponent to overheat, then move in with the Axe. Even an Atlas couldn\'t stand up to it if I could get them with the Flamer enough times before being vaporized.

I never did try the Force Feedback edition. It looked cool, but I loved (edit: love) the sidewinder 3d pro so much I didn\'t want to mess with a good thing.

Do they even make joystics/flightsticks anymore? Haven\'t looked at/for one in ages.

Vike: totally forgot to try that game when I got home, actually painted last night (amazing for me). Spent so much time on CMON yesterday that I just had to work on my ME11 Halfling.

Gi6ers: you have a link for/about Tachyon?

On a somewhat side thought, anyone tried Eve Online? Does that have a combat system like any of these oldies but goodies? I\'ve been tempted to try it for a while now, but haven\'t actually gotten a trial key yet.

Can\'t say anything about the computer game, but in the tabletop game by FASA the Atlas SUCKED! I had an Atlas and took one hit to the chest: crit: system hit? Amunition. What moron puts all of his explosive ordinance in one place? All of Atlas’ missiles exploded inside his chest. Basically one hit from a long range took the Atlas out of the game.

Fortunately I also had an army of 10-ton mechs with super speed and close range lasers that swarmed and devastated my opponent.

Yes. I just bought mine at Best Buy. Not a lot of selection but at least the quality is good.

Mechwarrior 4 was pretty decent at the time, but Mercs was a big upgrade to the same game engine. The improved HUD alone was worth it.

The only thing I regret about the game is the way it encourages pure brute strength all the time, there\'s only like 1-2 missions in either of them that you have to do stealthy.

I remember one where you only get to drop in one Mech and have to scan enemy bases while dodging patrols of medium/heavy mechs. It was super freakin intense in a Uller with max armor, engines, electronics package and no weapons of any consequence. I always managed to get caught by a Uziel near the end, and quite often made the evac point with a leg crippled :D

I even tried the mission a few times with a Daishi or other assault mechs, and tried to just take down all the base defenders. Didn\'t work so well, eventually you\'d get swarmed and take a few too many hits to the chest :p

I seem to remember Meach4 Vengeance had some better large scale confrontations as well, where you got 2 Lances and each side had a rather huge army meeting in a valley or whatever.

My all-time favorite thing to do run around doing Solaris Light class matches in a Cougar. Such a hot Mech! ER Large Laser, two ER Mediums, and as many homing STRK missiles as you can get. Sooo good lol

I thought vengance was the dumb one where you had those 3 vehicles follow you around and you could \'heal\' pretty much when you wanted. So you could run in pretty willy nilly, do some damage, run back get healed, run back in, etc...

I could be remembering the games wrong.

Heavy Gear, put out by Activision as well and using most of the same engine was pretty good as well, though I prefered the bigger slower moving mechs of Battletech.

I would so love to see a new one of these, maybe M$ will give up the licence and put out something other then a cheezy (though still kind of fun) simple shooter for the Xbox.

@Vince - in my experiences with the tabletop game, Atlas were the gods of the battlefield. The only reason people didn\'t play with them is they were so powerful it was just cheesy. My favourite tabletop mechs were always the Tomahawk, Hatchetman and Riflleman.

Haven\'t played it yet, but I have a good story from the original Mechwarrior game:

I barely made it to the final planet in time and had only 3 mechs - 2 Marauders (the best thing in 1) and 1 Atlas. I bought the only decent mech available: a Phoenix Hawk.
I hired a decent looking pilot for the Phoenix Hawk.

The new guy turned out to be a coward. First enemy that shot at him, and he ran away:(
I finished that round okay - the final battle was actually 3 sequential battles with no repairs in between.
Next round I ordered the Phoenix Hawk to run full tilt at the enemy while we slow mechs came lumbering behind.
Worked like a charm!
Mr. Coward got into range and then ran away...and the enemy chased him!
By the time my slow giants got close, the enemy was half-way across the map chasing the bouncing ball and the fortress was undefended!
