remember the x-wing game?

Does anyone have this?
I got the disk at a garage sale, but no owner\'s manual.
I was reading a hint page and it said \"tell your wingmen to attack ship x\"
How do I tell my wingmen something?

p.s. I got almost all the way through the first series before I realized I could recharge my guns and shields.

This is a quote from the gamefaqs guide to X-Wing:
\"The mines will quickly toast your wingmen if you let them attack the
containers. As soon as you emerge from hyperspace, tell your wingmen to
wait by selecting each one on the targeting system and pressing Shift-W.
They will stop their fighters outside the range of the mines. Go in and
destroy the containers and mines yourself. When the frigate arrives,
tell your wingmen to attack the TIE fighters by targeting a TIE fighter
and pressing Shift-A.\"

I\'m assuming this is the original X-Wing and the guide is at: http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/564900/2029
and http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/564922/24427

Hope that helps

Yep, i use to play this at my mates house. But i don\'t think i ever got past the first level!
(This was the game where the 1st level was a training one on tatooine or something, and you had to fly through a canyon...right?)

That would be Rogue Leader on the GC you are talking about right Matty?

X-Wing came out in \'94 if I remember correctly, a fair few years earlier. Flipping awesome, but fairly tricky game. I seem to recall that a joystick made things a lot more fun. TIE Fighter was even better. Being the baddie was so much cooler!

It was defo on a PC, a very old one. With a joystick.
I would have been about 8 or 9 year old so 96\' - 97\'ish

I can\'t imagine playing this without a joystick.
In fact, I had it for about a year before I bought a joystick just so I could play it.
I have the sequel games too but will play them in order.

Thanks for the tip. That really helps.

Oh, and Matty, you are thinking of some other game. X-wing starts with a training mission that is flying around these platforms in space and going through arches while being shot at by turrets.
Luckily you can cheat and skip the training.
Technically I\'m playing the X-wing collector\'s CDrom.

X-wing is still considered one of the best engines for a space flight simulator ever made.

There is a key guide in the game somewhere, and you can scroll through the option pages in-flight using the left and right arrow keys. It was a cool game but not as good as the tie-fighter version IMO.

Pretty sure this series is Abandonware which means you should be able to download it for free (legally).

Here\'s a link to the collectors edtion:
http://www.abandonia.com/games/375/download/StarWarsXWingCollectorsEdition.htm

A quick goole of abandonware and X wing will find more. I\'m sure X-wing vs Tie Fighter (the best of the series) should be out there as well.

Well I did love this series, my space shooter heart still lies with Wing Commander.

Wing Commander was great, but it really pissed me off.

There\'s this one point where you jump, fight some bad guys, jump and your wingman suicides into the big badguy ship.

I wanted to try taking on the big badguy ship but it wouldn\'t let me.

First: at the first jump I killed my wingman.
She reappeared to suicide.

Second: I damaged my wingman\'s ship so she ejected. I then \"rescued\" her into my hold. Again, she shows up in a new ship to suicide.

Otherwise, the fighting was great and I loved that you had rear guns you could switch to - nothing like flying while looking backwards!

I loved X-wing!! TiE Fighter was indeed better,. but man both were so fun. I\'ll bet I still have them someplace...

Have you ever tried Freespace? To me, that was the most engrossing space combat gave I have ever played...

@Vince I remember that mission. I think I tried the same thing to no avail.

The series was great until they added the new odd bilogoical aliens. The whole Kilrathi Saga was awesome though.

@Gi6ers and Vike, haven\'t tried either. I heard good things about Homeworld as well, but never tried that.

Are either of these modern? I would love to play a newer more up to date space shooter, but don\'t know of any. Closest I have seen was the ship combat in Star Wars Galaxies, which was the only thing good in the entire game.

The Abandonware site says some ESA types are actually enforcing the copyright on this long OOP game. I hate when that happens! I was looking forward to trying out some of those oldies but goodies, it\'s been far too long :D

Oops sorry. I didn\'t really check the site. I just did a quick search which came up with a site I had downloaded from before, so I cliked through to make sure the link was still valid, then did a quick copy past and didn\'t actually read anything.

Oddly, I swear this wasn\'t protected before... I wonder if someone decided to renew the licence. Or perhaps they had to as Jump to Lighspeed (for Star Wars Galaxies) used pretty much the same engine.

Hey Vince, while looking for Tie-Fighter on other abandonware sites I found this, which it sounds like you could use:

Freespace 1 and 2 were both from some time ago....They were fantastic...right on par with the great flight engine of Tie Fighter..but MUCH better graphics.

You can still get a free demo of it on this site

http://www.freespace2.com/

Obviously best with a joystick....

I still have my Microsoft Sidewinder 3d Pro... my third one as I used to eat through them playing the Mechwarrior series.

Will have to look into that. Thanks... sure I should be able to find them discounted.

*really wish I wasn\'t at work right now*

I have an ancient Sidewinder Precision Pro from the MechWarrior days as well :D I might try to find some of these old games once I get some assignments out of the way.

Just had my computer crash mid-essay. Lovely :p

Yeah! The Sidewinder was great! Still got mine too.

My brother actually bought the feedback one...pretty innovative for the time...it was freaking killer for MechWarrior!
