We finally got to see Serenity last night. It was definitely worth the wait. I like that it was a little darker....:D

@Vike; you could probably watch it just fine without having seen the series, but I would strongly recommend that you rent, borrow, beg or steal the DVD series (its only 5 disks) from someone and watch them first. You will certainly appreciate the characters and the character interaction much more. You don\'t get much of a sense of several of the characters in the movie as in the series.

Overall great! The two hours passed much too quickly! :D

@No Such Agency - Actually, Joss addressed this in an interview once. They put sound in that last battle because they ships were actually in the atmosphere of the planet plus there was the whole ion cloud thing surrounding the planet. It\'s shakey science, but it isn\'t purely unrealistic drama.

I believe that those who haven\'t seen Firefly can still enjoy the movie, although having a background in the TV show will give you a great deal more appreciation for the dialogue and character interaction.

I saw the movie 3 weeks ago in a sneak screening and then saw an afternoon showing on opening day. I am still in shock over parts of the ending.

I almost started a thread on this movie 3 days ago when I saw it, but couldn\'t do it.

Vike - you haven\'t watched Firefly? I\'ve offered to loan it to everyone who hasn\'t seen it since I bought the set when it came out.

Personally, I think it\'s one of the best-written shows ever. Extremely clever, humorous, and character-driven.

Joss Whedon created Buffy and Angel, both pretty well-written series, but Firefly was better, IMO.

The movie was pure Joss Whedon...which made me love it and hate him at the same time.

More than that I won\'t give away. I sincerely suggest you watch the DVD set. He only got to make a 1/2 season, which is a damn shame. But that\'s only 13 episodes on 4 discs for you to watch. HIGHLY recommend. You\'ll get such a great feel for the characters...

I had been waiting for this movie for months. Actually had a pass to the sneak preview, but ended up taking care of my wife that night from seeing the doctor. Sniffles went in my place.

Good thing, too. Not sure I could\'ve kept a lid on it for 2 weeks...:flame:

@ vike - One of my friends who came with us to see it on Saturday has never seen Firefly, and he said he enjoyed the movie a lot. Granted, he was sitting next to a bunch of fans, but from what he said after the movie, he was able to follow things pretty well and really enjoyed the movie.

@ Zora - Heh...yeah...I got to see a prerelease showing last Tuesday. It was pretty difficult talking to some of my friends without wanting to say something. :p

Okay, now just imagine me, having seen a sneak preview a couple of weeks ago, listening to Zora talking about how he\'s been watching the DVDs all last week and can\'t wait to see the resolution of some plot points from the series... ;)

I thought it was excellent, although naturally more fun for fans of the series. I think non-fans can enjoy it too, but they didn\'t bend over backward to explain everything for the non-fans so there may be some points that don\'t make much sense to such viewers. The special effects are great, the plotting is tight, the action is good - but the best part is the character interaction. Joss Whedon is king of great character moments, IMHO.

I couldn\'t believe 2 hours went by so quickly! I was ready for the movie to go on for another couple of hours! :D

Well I took my Fiance to see it and she had never seen the TV show and liked it a lot. I think she would of liked it even more if she had seen the TV show.

Does seeing the TV show help? Yes, but it is not needed.

I thought it was a bueatifully done movie that captured the attention of the audiance.

While it is not neccasary to see it on the BIG screen, I would recomend it to anyone.

It was 2 hours long, did not seem like it. I was all ready to sit and watch the next showing. :D

I want sequels! :cool:

Forget another movie! Those take years to produce. I want the TV series back so I can get a Firefly fix on a weekly basis!

Mike, they already have, Mongoose Publishing has printed it already.....it\'s not D20 and it\'s a fairly thin hardback book. I saw it at my LGS this weekend, friend of mine picked it up. Heck, if he\'s gonna run it, I might try playing in it

Weekly series would be better.

I think SciFi has the resources to do it, once they realize it\'s a quality product.

I know you\'re gonna hate me for saying this, but I\'m never too sanguine about picking up a series that\'s been off the air for more than a few months. It just won\'t be the same. They somehow managed to hang on to the magic for the movie, but I seriously doubt they\'ll be able to do it again on a weekly basis. And Joss is off to do the Wonder Woman movie.

And don\'t forget how Sci Fi screwed themselves with Farscape - cancelled their best show to concentrate on cheaper stuff like Stargate and Battlestar Galactica. :(

I\'ll chime in and agree I don\'t think you need to have seen any of the TV series to understand and enjoy what\'s going on in the film. I also agree it is very worth picking up the DVD of Firefly if you like the movie or character driven sci-fi in general. Although I found it off-putting initially, the whole sci-fi western thing does work. It\'s down-played a lot in the film, which I think is to its benefit for marketing and grabbing new viewers.

I\'ve only had a brief scan through the RPG so far, we sold our three copies at work pretty quickly, so I\'ll have to wait for restock to have a closer look. It includes stat sheets and background writeups for all the characters on the show, and I believe also for a fictious group using the character generation rules. Characters have a die for a stat (so Simon\'s intelligence might be a d10 and his strength a d6), which you roll with your skill value to make a skill check. Characters also have a variety of colourfully-named assets and flaws. It looks like more of a simplified streamlined system approach than a chart-heavy super realism one.

My husband is in a bit of a fannish mode and bought the novelization of the movie, and I read it the other night, so I\'ll pass along my opinions of that in case anyone\'s interested. The tone is very much in keeping with the way characters in the Serenity universe talk. There aren\'t really any events that aren\'t shown on screen or are elaborated on in more detail. If anything, there are one or two things seen in the movie kinda skipped over in the book. It\'s a decent book, but nothing spectacular.

Another movie I was \'mildly\' interested in was the new Dungeons&Dragons movie. I didn\'t want to actually see it, I was just wondering why someone would bother with a sequel and if it would be nearly as bad as the first. Now I see it\'s going to be on Sci-fi channel soon. ???

Now I REALLY wonder what the point of making it was. The good part of this is that the trailer makes the movie seem not half bad, and I get to see it without wasting any money. No down side there. :D

As far as Firefly goes, I first heard about it HERE on another thread, I think it was RedDawn who explained it to me. I been catching episodes here and there on Sci-fi, but it looks like one of those series you REALLY need to follow to get into. I will see the movie though, because I love Sci-fi in every form (yes, even when done poorly by John Travlota).

There was one episode I really liked though, the one where the dicky guy is worshipped as a hero on that mud-planet. Good writing there. :)
