Some help on improving?

Here\'s my latest mini, number 7.

He\'s getting rated a little lower than expected , but cest la vie. Anyway, the main point of this post is to try and get some help in improving my painting. i.e. are there any specific area I really need to work on, besides just practice. Do I need more work on blending, neatness, what have you. Some comments on this mini might be helpful as well.


I need all the help I can get .

Funny, I had just left a comment for your mini when I saw this post...

You are off to a darn good start. I think brighter highlights (or darker shading) would help the mini have more \'pop\'. I can see there is some color blending (like on the red and the green) but it is pretty subtle. This is something I struggle with myself....I really have to force myself to highlight brighter.

For instance, you worked the red up from a brown base, but now you might want to blend in a little orange color at the tops of the folds. That will give the impression of a brighter red.

Another suggestion I would have would be to use more blacklining. Some people don\'t seem to like it, but it is an effective way to show definition between seperate detail on the mini.

Keep on plugging away....The practice is actually pretty fun!!!

I agree with supervike...adding a bit of orange to the red for additional highlighting of the folds on the garment. I kind of like the two-toned weapons, but I couldn\'t see his eyes all that well?? They are pretty dark...Maybe a little more white????

Otherwise, you\'re mini painting is progressing well.

P.S. Did you really find rocks for the base on your floor? Doesn\'t that chew up you vacuum cleaner??

It\'s a nice looking mini, but I have the same crits already stated. What are you using for primer? in parts it looks like the paint\'s beginning to rub off.

I\'d work on those for the moment and then when you\'re happier with the results there are more things to try. Different facial tones, but as supervike said Practice, Practice, Practice.
I keep telling my wife that I need to practise my skin tones to improve, hence the number of scantily clad female figurines. (She\'s not buying it though )

mebbe washes in the folds of the cloak? the face muscles need definition too... theres some good tutorials online here.
